The friendship between Meghan Markle and the famous designer was once strained because of Kate.
In his new memoir, designer Roland Mouret recounts an incident involving Kate Middleton’s team that strained his relationship with Meghan Markle, to the point where Meghan declared she could no longer wear his designs.
Behind the outfits that are meticulously analyzed by the Royal media are many little-known stories about how members of the Royal Family and celebrities work with the designer. In his memoir, *I Am Roland Mouret: The Butcher’s Boy Who Dressed the World* , French designer Roland Mouret recounts an incident that occurred during the early stages of Meghan Markle’s relationship with Prince Harry, which put their relationship in an awkward position.
According to Mouret, a member of his team mistakenly contacted Kate Middleton’s stylist to retrieve outfits sent to Meghan. This incident embarrassed the Duchess and led to a tense conversation between her and the designer.
A wrong number call left Meghan feeling humiliated.
Mouret said he met Meghan in 2015, after they met at an event in Istanbul. At that time, Meghan was still working as an actress and had not yet entered royal life.
According to his memoir, after learning that Meghan was dating an Englishman, Mouret guessed she would need many outfits for upcoming events. He proactively offered to send her some designs to choose from, while instructing his staff not to pressure her about returns and not to share the information with others.
However, after Meghan and Harry’s relationship became public, an employee of the designer contacted Kate Middleton’s stylist to request the recall of the outfits sent to Meghan. Mouret described this as an employee error, stemming from an attempt to expedite the process.
According to his account, Meghan called and expressed her anger: “You don’t realize what you’ve done! You’ve embarrassed me!”
Mouret said he immediately apologized, explaining that it was just a mistake by an employee who didn’t fully understand the situation. He also acknowledged that Meghan wanted to keep her private life secret when her relationship with Harry first came into public attention.
However, according to the designer, Meghan responded that from that point on, she could no longer wear his designs. Mouret wrote that he didn’t understand the logic behind this decision, but didn’t press her further.

Roland Mouret said Meghan’s decision did not come from the Royal Family.
In his memoir, Mouret emphasizes that Meghan’s decision to stop wearing his designs was the Duchess’s personal choice, not a request from the Royal Family or any other figure. He also suggests that the matter wasn’t a big deal for everyone else.
This detail is noteworthy because Meghan’s outfits during the early stages of her marriage to Harry were often under widespread scrutiny. Each of her choices could have an impact on brands, while the royal family’s image and privacy rules made handling her attire more sensitive than usual.
The story didn’t end there. Mouret recounted that the following year, he saw a photo of Meghan wearing what he considered a cheap copy of one of his designs. The designer decided to text her, saying that he could understand if she didn’t want to wear his clothes, but choosing a copy made sense to him.
According to Mouret, Meghan later responded that she thought she should see him. This detail suggests that the relationship between the two had a chance to be rekindled after the incident, although the designer did not provide a specific timeline for the reconciliation process.
In fact, Meghan continued to wear Mouret designs in the following years. One of the most notable was the dress she wore the night before her wedding to Harry in 2018. She also wore the designer’s creations on several public occasions while serving as a member of the Royal Family.
Recently, Meghan continued to appear in promotional images for the lifestyle brand As Ever wearing a Mouret design. This detail suggests that accounts of past disagreements do not mean she has completely severed ties with the brand.
The story revealed in Roland Mouret’s memoir is therefore more than just an awkward situation between a celebrity and a designer. It also shows how small misunderstandings at work can become much more complicated when they involve the image, reputation, and privacy of figures who are constantly under public scrutiny.
