ITV’s The 1% Club Viewers Admit Defeat After Tricky Final Maths Question Leaves Contestants Stumped
Lee Mack returned to The 1% Club on Saturday night, but one particularly challenging maths question proved too difficult for two contestants who had made it all the way to the final stage. Maisie and Alex were left weighing up whether to risk their winnings, while viewers at home admitted they had struggled to work out the answer themselves.
The puzzle sparked plenty of frustration, with some fans confessing they had given up before even attempting to solve it within the show’s 30-second time limit.

The Final Question That Left Contestants Second-Guessing Themselves
During the ITV quiz show, Lee Mack presented Maisie and Alex with the following problem:
“Given that: 0+100 =100, 1+99 = 100, 2+98 =100, What is the sum of all the whole numbers between zero and 100?”

The pair both settled on 5,000, believing they had worked out the total. However, their answer fell short of the correct figure, which was 5,050.
Lee explained the reasoning behind the solution. The numbers could be grouped into 50 pairs, with each pair adding up to 100. For example, 0 and 100 make 100, as do 1 and 99, 2 and 98, and so on.
Multiplying those 50 pairs by 100 gives 5,000. However, there is one number left in the middle: 50. Since it does not form part of one of those pairs, it must be added separately, bringing the final answer to 5,050.
Even with the explanation, the question proved a stumbling block for viewers watching at home.
Why Maisie And Alex Chose To Take Their Winnings
Having reached the final question, Maisie and Alex ultimately decided to take their winnings rather than risk losing them by attempting the challenge.
Lee asked the pair what had been going through their minds as they made their decision.
Alex admitted that he had considered going for the question but was unsure what to do. He could already imagine his parents encouraging him to take the money instead of gambling it away.
Maisie explained that her usual instinct when watching the programme would have been to take the risk. She had arrived with nothing and reasoned that she could leave with nothing, too, if things went wrong.
However, the amount of money at stake made her hesitate.
Lee pointed out that the decision could feel different depending on how many contestants were playing. With eight people sharing the risk, each person would be putting less money on the line than a pair of just two contestants.
He also asked Maisie whether she had expected to attempt the final question when she first walked onto the show.
She admitted she had doubts, adding that her brother would probably have been much more confident and would have gone for it.

Viewers Admit They Struggled With The Maths
The difficult question prompted a wave of reactions on X, where viewers shared their own frustrations with the challenge.
One viewer confessed they had not even attempted to work it out, explaining that maths was difficult enough with a calculator, let alone trying to solve a problem mentally in just 30 seconds.
Another was equally bewildered, writing that they had not even understood the explanation.
A third viewer praised Maisie and Alex for reaching 5,000 in less than 30 seconds, despite the answer being incorrect. They admitted that they had needed even longer to work it out while watching a recording of the programme, pausing the question to give themselves more time.
The same viewer also joked about Lee Mack’s jokes, explaining that pausing the programme meant they did not have to listen to them while solving the puzzle. They added that the final 1% question was always a gamble because some people immediately spotted the solution while others could not see it at all.
Other viewers agreed that the episode had featured particularly difficult questions. One person said they had managed to reach the end of the quiz the previous week but had been knocked out much earlier this time.
Another viewer believed Maisie and Alex had made the sensible choice by using their pass to reach the final 1% question, turning £1,000 into £5,000 rather than risking their money on the last challenge.
The episode once again demonstrated how a seemingly straightforward number puzzle can become a real test under pressure, especially when contestants have only seconds to find the answer.
The 1% Club is available to watch on ITV Hub.
