The 1% Club Contestant Misses Out on £96,000 After Struggling With Final Word Puzzle
A contestant on The 1% Club came agonisingly close to winning £96,000, only to lose the jackpot after failing to solve a final word puzzle within the 30-second time limit. Brett had answered every previous question correctly, but his impressive run ended at the last hurdle, leaving him frustrated and viewers questioning the wording of the challenge.
Hosted by Lee Mack, 56, the ITV quiz show puts contestants through a series of logic and reasoning tests. Players are gradually eliminated until one finalist remains, earning the opportunity to tackle a question designed to be answered correctly by only 1% of the British public.

Brett Risks £10,000 for the £96,000 Jackpot
After making it through the earlier rounds, Brett faced a difficult choice: accept a guaranteed £10,000 or risk it all for the £96,000 jackpot and a place in the prestigious 1% Club.
He decided to go for the bigger prize.
The final challenge required Brett to complete three connected sentences by inserting the same four-letter word into each one. The word had to fit naturally in all three sentences, making the task more complicated than it initially appeared.
The sentences read:
- “____ I am certain that he read the man’s notes.”
- “I am certain that ____ he had read the man’s notes.”
- “I am certain that he had read the man’s ____ notes.”
With just 30 seconds to work out the missing word, Brett stared at the screen as the countdown continued. He appeared increasingly unsettled as he struggled to find a solution, eventually letting out an audible sigh as time ran out.
When Lee asked about his answer, Brett admitted: “I didn’t know it. I put ‘last’. I just couldn’t see it.”
Unfortunately, “last” was not the word required. The correct answer was “only.”

Viewers Question the Final Puzzle
The reveal prompted gasps from the studio audience, with many appearing surprised that Brett had come so close to the jackpot before losing out on the final question.
Lee offered words of encouragement, acknowledging both the risk Brett had taken and how well he had performed throughout the competition.
“Brett, unlucky. That was a big gamble. You did brilliantly to get this far, and you have of course got your £1,000. So congratulations. Unfortunately, you didn’t make it into the 1% Club, but you can walk away knowing that you did better than the rest of the people in this room tonight. Well done you!” the host said.
Although Brett missed out on the £96,000 prize, he still left with £1,000.

The result sparked debate among viewers watching at home, with several taking to X to question whether the puzzle was fair or whether the wording made the answer unnecessarily confusing.
One viewer defended Brett, writing: “What a joke, the first and last sentence makes no sense at all. I feel so sorry for the guy. He was ripped off.”
Another echoed the criticism, saying: “Robbed him. How does only make sense in the bottom sentence?”
Brett’s near-miss became a talking point among fans, with the final puzzle dividing opinion over whether the four-letter word worked convincingly across all three sentences.
