As monarch, King Charles has a wealth of royal residences to move between. From Buckingham Palace to Balmoral Castle, and even the Palace of Holyroodhouse, he is not short of places to stay.
However, one of his most liked residences appears to be Windsor Castle. While this residence is popular among many royals, it seems to have a spooky edge.
That is because, according to reports, it is the “most haunted” of King Charles’s homes. This is due to the fact that it has had over 25 different ghost sightings, which is enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine.
Construction of the castle began in 1070, and it has been used by a number of monarchs, dating back to Henry I. It seems that some of these monarchs loved the castle so much that, even after death, they just didn’t want to leave.
Among the monarchs that have reportedly left a ghostly presence in the castle are Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth I and King George III. According to Visit Britain, Queen Elizabeth I’s footsteps can be heard on the bare floorboards around the castle.
She has also been sighted, with Queen Elizabeth II once claiming that she and Princess Margaret witnessed paranormal activity in the castle together, which they believed to be Elizabeth I.
Another ghost to haunt the much-loved castle’s walls is reportedly King George III. Reports suggest he wanders in the room below the library, where he spent a large amount of time towards the end of his reign when he was mentally unwell.
It is believed witnesses have seen a figure that appears to be him “looking longingly out of the window”. Other sightings have him spotted in a bedroom of the castle, with an officer once claiming to have seen the former monarch just days after he passed away.
According to the officer, guards were passing the King’s window on their duties when the commanding officer saw the distinctive figure of the King standing in his usual place watching the parade.

The officer gave the order, “Eyes right” and as they swung around, they watched the figure resembling the late King salute. If this is not scary enough, records from over the years also suggest that King Henry VIII can be heard in the castle.
It is believed that they hear the hobbling sound, which he used to make when he walked around the castle, as he was so obese and found it hard to walk. While these stories are scary, especially around Halloween, it seems they do not put the royals off from using the castle frequently.
King Charles conducts much of his royal work at the royal residence, including hosting state visits. Prince William and Princess Catherine, whose own home is just a short drive from the castle, also spend a lot of their time working from the residence.
