Seven people have been shot as gunfire erupted in Paterson, New Jersey on Mother’s Day.
Shots were fired around 9 p.m. near 230 Rosa Parks Boulevard and Godwin Avenue. ABC reports “four or five victims,” though some reports suggest up to seven. A video circulating on social media appeared to show police holding down one man as several bodies lay on the ground.
The victims were taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, according to initial reports, with no current updates on their conditions. Another person reportedly left the scene on their own, reports local News 12. Police have so far not released the details of what led up to the Mother’s day eve shooting.

Paterson City Councilman Alex Mendez’s office is a block away from the scene of the shooting, and he reported running inside for cover when he heard the shots ringing out. He then came back outside to survey the scene.
“Multiple people got shot right here. My office is a block away from here. Was working with all my volunteers and I hear the shooting. So it’s scary. I mean, this city’s out of control,” Mendez said.
Video circulating on social media showed commotion at the scene
Patterson police marked the street off to collect dozens of pieces of evidence, including shell casings.
It comes a day after another shooting in Paterson left one person dead and three others wounded, on Saturday night, according to officials.
Police were called at about 6:13 p.m. to East 29th Street near 10th Avenue. All four victims were rushed to a nearby hospital. A 20-year-old man from Oxford, New Jersey, later died. Two people are still in critical condition, while a fourth is listed as stable.
Sources told PIX11 the group in the unrelated shooting had been together for a child’s birthday celebration.

While Mother’s Day is typically a low day for crime, across the river in New York City a teen was shot to death outside of a NYCHA building in another unconnected incident.
Police discovered 18-year-old Quahmir Cruz suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken by emergency medical crews to a nearby hospital, where officials said he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators are treating the shooting as a homicide. No arrests had been made as of Sunday evening.
Authorities have not released details about what may have prompted the shooting or identified any possible suspects, but asked anyone with information to come forward.
