Before James Corden became a household name as Smithy in the BBC’s hit sitcom Gavin and Stacey, he starred alongside several of his future co-stars in the acclaimed 2006 comedy-drama The History Boys.

If, like me, you’re a die-hard Gavin and Stacey fan, you’ve likely already seen it – but for those who haven’t, you’re in for a treat as the film is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

Adapted from Alan Bennett’s Olivier and Tony Award-winning play, the film follows a group of teenage boys at a 1980s Yorkshire grammar school as they vie for places at Oxford or Cambridge.

Directed by Nicholas Hytner, the film features an impressive ensemble cast, including Andrew Knott, Samuel Anderson, and Russell Tovey – all of whom would later appear as friends of Gavin and Smithy in James’ BBC comedy.

Before you press play, find out all you need to know about the show below…

What is The History Boys about?

Set in 1980s Yorkshire, Alan Bennett’s adaptation of his acclaimed play follows a class of eight sixth form students preparing for the Oxford and Cambridge entrance examinations under the guidance of three contrasting teachers.

The BBC logline reads: “A class of likely lads, caught in a clash of educational styles as they prepare to apply to Oxford or Cambridge, find their loyalties as well as their intellects tested.”
