Dr. Courtney Shah, a seven-time Jeopardy! champion, has died. She was 52.

Courtney died “in the comfort of her home” on Wednesday, July 22, her daughter, Maya Shaw, announced through a post on the website for the nonprofit CaringBridge.

She had been receiving hospice care at home after she learned in March that treatment for her brain cancer, including radiation and chemotherapy, had not been working.

“I don’t know what you believe about death, but I like to think that she’s at peace now,” Maya wrote in a tribute to her mother. “We loved her in this world, and we loved her out of this world, and we’ll go on loving her.”

“Thank you for your grace in all of this,” the grieving daughter continued. “It hasn’t been easy. It will continue not to be easy. Hug your loved ones.”

Courtney competed on Jeopardy! in 2021, when she earned a total of $118,558 across a seven-game winning streak, as well as an additional $2,000 for her second-place finish during her eighth game, according to J! Archive, a fan-run online database for the popular game show.

She also competed in the 2022 Tournament of Champions, where she placed third in her quarterfinal match. She earned a $5,000 consolation prize as a quarterfinalist, per Jeopardy!

In a March update shared on CaringBridge, Maya wrote that her mother’s love of Jeopardy! kept her going amid her cancer diagnosis.

Despite Courtney’s illness not responding to treatment “in the way we hoped,” Maya said her mom was still “watching basketball, rooting for Duke and uh, firing off Jeopardy! answers before anyone else in the room.”

“Tomorrow, I’m marrying the woman I chose over you,” my ex-husband said with a laugh. The music from his wedding rehearsal played in the background as he delivered the words he knew would hurt me most. “Come watch us win, Claire.” I looked down at the tiny baby sleeping against my chest. The son he never asked about. The child he walked away from before knowing his first heartbeat, his first breath, or the fear I felt carrying him alone. So I simply whispered: “Sorry, Ethan. I’m busy taking care of someone you abandoned.” For the first time, his confidence disappeared. Then, thirty minutes later… The hospital doors flew open. Ethan rushed inside, still wearing his expensive suit, but the arrogance was gone. His face was pale. His voice was shaking. “Where is the baby? Is he mine?” The woman he left me for stood behind him, furious that their perfect wedding plans had been interrupted. But before Ethan could demand anything else, the doctor opened a file. And one sentence changed everything. “The DNA test confirms Noah is your son.” Ethan froze. Then came the truth he never expected. The reason my baby arrived early. The reason I almost lost everything. The reason his perfect wedding suddenly became the least of his problems. Because Ethan thought he had left behind a broken, helpless ex-wife. He had no idea I had spent ten years building the very empire he claimed was his… and quietly saving every piece of evidence of his betrayal. Now he wasn’t facing an angry woman. He was facing the person who knew every secret he thought he had buried.

My phone buzzed while my newborn rested quietly against my chest, his tiny fingers tucked beneath my collarbone. The name on the screen made me sigh. It…

“Dad… this house isn’t yours anymore.” I stared at my own son, certain I had misheard him. Then he tossed a stack of legal papers onto my desk and smiled. “Signatures don’t lie.” My hands started shaking. The $12 million oceanfront estate my late wife and I had built a lifetime of memories in… had somehow been transferred to my son’s in-laws while I was recovering from surgery. His mother-in-law looked me up and down before saying the words I’ll never forget: “People your age belong in a nursing home… not in a mansion.”

“You really wore that to Christmas dinner?” my son-in-law smirked the moment he saw my faded coat. I simply smiled. For one night, I wanted everyone in that mansion to believe I was just a lonely old widower living on a small retirement check. And they did. Throughout dinner, they laughed at my old pickup truck, my worn clothes, and the “government checks” they assumed I depended on. Every joke grew crueler than the last. I never defended myself. I was waiting. Then, just as dessert was served, my son-in-law’s father quietly slid an envelope across the table. What was inside wasn’t what shocked me…

“Dad… don’t call me again.” Three days after surviving open-heart surgery, a 75-year-old father stood outside the hospital with nothing but a paper bag of medication, $6.20 in his wallet, and one heartbreaking realization… His daughter had blocked his number. She had promised to take him home after surgery. Instead, she disappeared, leaving him alone with no ride, no money for a taxi, and a 40-mile journey back to his farmhouse. Every step sent pain through the fresh incision across his chest. But just as he prepared to begin the impossible walk, a black luxury sedan slowly pulled up beside him. His surgeon stepped out, stared at him in disbelief, and quietly asked one question: “Were you driving Highway 18 during that snowstorm… thirty-five years ago?” The old man nodded. A few seconds later, the surgeon whispered eight words that brought them both to tears: “I never forgot what you did for me.” What happened next proves that the smallest act of kindness can return decades later… when you need it most.
