Before Johnny Cash Became a Legend, He Shared a Stage With Elvis Presley — And This Early Gig Was Anything But Ordinary

Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley Released the Same Song Before Genre Changes - AOL

Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley once shared the stage — but their friendship remained surprisingly distant

Long before Johnny Cash became a defining figure in country music and Elvis Presley was crowned the King of Rock ’n’ Roll, the two future legends were young performers chasing their first big breaks. For a short stretch in the mid-1950s, their careers overlapped in remarkable ways.

Both artists were connected to Sun Records, and they appeared together on several concert bills. One of the most important early moments came on August 5, 1955, when Cash joined Presley and a lineup of rising musicians at Bob Neal’s Eighth Annual Country Music Jamboree at the Overton Park shell in Memphis, Tennessee.

Cash later recalled the performance during a 1980 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, identifying the Presley co-bill as one of his first professional engagements of any real importance.

The show featured an impressive lineup, including headliner Webb Pierce and The Wondering Boys, Wanda Jackson, Sonny James, Charlie Feathers and Rod Sevine.

More than 4,000 people packed into the venue that summer evening, while hundreds more were turned away. Considering the enormous turnout, it is easy to understand why Cash remembered the performance as such an important milestone in his early career.

The connection did not end with that Memphis performance.

After the Overton Park show, Presley hired Cash and his backing group, the Tennessee Two, to open for him during a series of tour dates spanning roughly three or four months.

It was an extraordinary opportunity for a young Cash, who was still establishing himself in the music business.

But as their careers grew, their professional paths gradually moved in different directions. Cash became one of country music’s most respected figures, while Presley’s fame exploded and secured his place as the King of Rock ’n’ Roll.

Their friendship never became especially close, but Cash continued to hold Presley in high regard.

Johnny Cash never forgot Elvis’s charisma

In his autobiography, Cash explained that he and Presley liked each other but were never particularly close.

Cash noted that he was older than Presley and already married, which contributed to the distance between them. As Presley became increasingly private later in his life, Cash said he respected that boundary rather than attempting to intrude.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the two occasionally spoke on the telephone and exchanged notes. Their relationship remained friendly but limited. If Presley was finishing a run at the Las Vegas Hilton while Cash was preparing to begin one, Presley might call to wish him luck.

That, Cash said, was generally the extent of their contact.

Yet his admiration for Presley never faded.

Cash remembered Elvis as exceptionally kind, talented and charismatic. He also acknowledged that Presley’s extraordinary success could provoke jealousy in others, something Cash regarded as a natural but unfortunate reaction to fame.

Most revealingly, Cash admitted that whenever he performed on the same bill as Presley, he made sure to watch him from the wings.

He was not alone. According to Cash, everyone wanted to watch Elvis perform.

The reason was simple: Presley possessed a level of charisma that was impossible to ignore.
