Newcastle and Liverpool unite in emotional Kevin Keegan tribute as family thank club for “love and warmth”

Kevin Keegan was remembered in deeply moving fashion at St James’ Park on Sunday as Newcastle United and Liverpool came together to honour one of the most important figures in both clubs’ histories.

The tribute took place before Newcastle’s Premier League meeting with Liverpool on August 23, just weeks after Keegan died aged 75 following a battle with cancer. The Armthorpe-born football icon had represented both clubs during his playing career and later became a hugely influential manager at Newcastle.

For his family, the occasion was particularly poignant. A letter included in Newcastle’s matchday programme thanked the club, its supporters and the wider city for the extraordinary support they had shown since Keegan’s death.

St James’ Park turns into a tribute to “King Kev”

The scale of the pre-match tribute reflected Keegan’s unique place in Newcastle’s history.

Newcastle players warmed up wearing shirts featuring his famous No.7, while 500 shirts were arranged inside the centre circle to form a mosaic bearing the words “legend” and “There’s only one Kevin Keegan.” The shirts were among those left outside St James’ Park following the news of his death.

Former Newcastle and Liverpool players also played a central role in the ceremony. Bobby Moncur, Ian Rush, Shola Ameobi and Sir Kenny Dalglish laid wreaths at the Newcastle memorial gardens before the 4.30pm kick-off.

Inside the stadium, supporters were given placards to hold aloft, including the words “Long live the king.” Wor Flags created a special display featuring Keegan’s name in red in the Liverpool section of Level Seven, with the number seven appearing among the home supporters.

A large one-off tifo was also unveiled, featuring images of Keegan from his two spells at Newcastle — first as a player and later as manager — alongside the words “King Kev.”

Other banners recalled one of Keegan’s most memorable messages to Newcastle supporters: “We should all be dreamers.” That sentiment remained particularly fitting as fans gathered to celebrate a man whose arrival had transformed the mood and ambitions around the club.

Before the teams emerged, a minute’s applause was held in Keegan’s memory. Supporters from both sides joined in, with figures including Dalglish and Alan Shearer taking part.

Liverpool’s players also wore tribute shirts during their warm-up, underlining the connection Keegan maintained with both clubs throughout his career.

Keegan family sends heartfelt thanks to Newcastle

The emotional significance of the day was captured in a letter from Keegan’s family published in the Newcastle matchday programme.

Addressing Newcastle supporters and the city, the family described the preceding weeks as among the hardest they had experienced as they said goodbye to their husband, father and grandfather.

Although the family lived outside the region, they said the affection coming from the North East had reached them and provided comfort during an exceptionally difficult time.

They also expressed their gratitude for the empathy and compassion shown by Newcastle United and the wider community.

Members of the family had returned to Newcastle to see the tributes and memorials around St James’ Park for themselves. They described the sight of the sea of black-and-white shirts and scarves, joined by colours representing supporters of other clubs, as a powerful reminder of how much Keegan had meant to football as a whole.

For the family, the tributes brought together grief, pride and love.

They also said Keegan had always spoken fondly of Newcastle United, the Geordies and the city, often entertaining his family with stories told with his characteristic infectious smile.

Seeing the tributes gave his grandchildren the opportunity to understand just how deeply their grandfather had been loved by the people of Newcastle.

The family ended their message by expressing their lasting gratitude to the club and community for the strength and affection they had shown.

“Newcastle, thank you for your love. The Keegan Family.”

A career that connected Newcastle and Liverpool

Keegan’s football journey began at Scunthorpe United in 1968, where he spent three years before earning a move to Liverpool.

His six years at Anfield proved hugely successful. Keegan won the First Division title three times with Liverpool, along with the European Cup and two UEFA Cups.

He later moved to Hamburger SV, where he added a Bundesliga title before returning to England with Southampton in 1980.

His first spell with Newcastle followed in 1982. Keegan spent two years at St James’ Park before finishing his playing career with Blacktown City.

Newcastle fans applaud

He then embarked on management, returning to Newcastle in 1992 and immediately making an impact by guiding the club to the First Division title in his first season.

Keegan remained at the helm for five years before moving on to Fulham. He subsequently had spells in charge of England and Manchester City before returning to Newcastle for a final managerial stint in 2008.

His influence at Newcastle went far beyond results. Keegan became closely associated with the club’s identity and the optimism that surrounded the team, earning an enduring place in the hearts of supporters.

A fitting tribute before an unforgettable Premier League opener

The ceremony provided a poignant backdrop to the opening Premier League fixture of the 2026/27 season for both clubs.

Once the applause and tributes had concluded, Newcastle and Liverpool produced a dramatic 2-2 draw.

Anthony Elanga gave Newcastle an early lead, Cody Gakpo equalised for Liverpool, and Joe Willock restored the hosts’ advantage. Liverpool eventually rescued a point when Dominik Szoboszlai converted a stoppage-time penalty.

Yet the result was almost secondary to what had happened before kick-off.

At St James’ Park, the two clubs that had played such an important role in Kevin Keegan’s extraordinary career stood together to remember him. The banners, shirts, wreaths, applause and words from his family offered a fitting farewell to a football figure whose legacy remains deeply woven into both Newcastle and Liverpool.
