From Wayne’s Life Away From Football To Their Four Sons Growing Up In The Spotlight, The Cameras Have Been Given Unprecedented Access. And The First Footage Hints That Nothing Has Been Left Safely Behind Closed Doors

The Real Rooneys trailer offers chaotic first look at Wayne and Coleen’s family life as football, fame and four boys collide

The Rooneys are opening the doors to their family life — and the first trailer for Disney+’s The Real Rooneys suggests viewers are about to see a side of Wayne and Coleen that has rarely been shown in public.

The 10-part series follows the couple, both 40, through a pivotal period as their lives take a very different direction. With Wayne stepping away from football management after being sacked by Plymouth in December 2024 and Coleen embracing major new career opportunities, the cameras capture the highs, frustrations and everyday chaos inside their family home.

Wayne swaps the touchline for school runs

One of the biggest changes in Wayne’s life comes into sharp focus in the trailer.

After his departure from Plymouth, the former England star found himself exchanging the football dugout for a very different routine — spending more time around the family and taking on school-run duties.

Speaking to the Disney+ cameras, Wayne jokes about the unexpected turn his career took.

“We spoke about her doing more work but not about me getting sacked!”

While Wayne adjusts to life away from football management, Coleen’s professional life is moving in the opposite direction.

The mother-of-four is shown pursuing some of the biggest opportunities of her career, including the launch of her own Primark fashion range.

Coleen even makes it clear that she intends to enjoy the spotlight.

“This is my series, are you glad that I let you on?” she teases Wayne in the trailer.

His response is typically blunt: “Oh here we go. Get over it.”

‘No one knows the real Rooneys’

The trailer quickly establishes that life inside the Rooney household is anything but quiet.

As their four sons jump around on the sofa, Coleen describes the reality of raising the family.

“It’s hectic, it’s mad. Not much peace and quiet around here.”

But she believes the series will reveal something much deeper than the familiar public image of one of Britain’s best-known couples.

“No one knows the real Rooneys. This is a side we have never shown before.”

That promise forms the central idea of the series, with cameras following Wayne and Coleen not simply through their careers but through the everyday pressures of marriage and parenthood.

The programme will also document their efforts to support eldest son Kai as he pursues his own football ambitions.

Coleen’s ‘dream’ home comes with one problem

An additional two minutes of footage shown to media attending the Edinburgh TV Festival offered an even more revealing glimpse into the family’s day-to-day routine.

At one point, Coleen attempts to enjoy a rare moment to herself while being interviewed.

“It’s nice just having time for me…”

The peace does not last long.

One of her children interrupts to ask what is being served for dinner. Coleen replies that they are having spaghetti bolognese before joking: “Why didn’t he ask his dad first?”

The footage also shows Coleen discussing the family’s home, which she describes as the house she always dreamed of having.

“This house is everything I have dreamed of,” she explains, recalling how, as a child, she would draw a house with a door and matching sides.

Wayne then appears to poke fun at her enthusiasm, singing Blur’s Country House: “She lives in a house, a very big house in the country.”

Coleen has only one complaint.

“The only problem is we have to share it with our four boys.”

The couple share Kai, 16, Klay, 13, Kit, 10, and Cass, eight.

From football dreams to family mayhem

The series promises plenty of action away from the football pitch, too.

In one scene, Wayne races a kart around the grounds with his sons, tearing across the grass and behaving more like one of the children himself.

But the programme will also return to the more serious moments of his career.

Wayne opens up about the latter stages of his time in football management and admits that being sacked was never part of his plans.

At the same time, viewers will follow Coleen as her fashion ambitions and other professional ventures continue to develop.

Together, the contrasting journeys provide the backdrop for a year in which both halves of the couple are navigating major changes.

What viewers can expect from The Real Rooneys

Disney+ says the series will feature “surprising personal revelations, career-defining moments, lavish celebrations and unforgettable family holidays”.

The cameras have been given unusually close access to the family, documenting everything from the couple’s professional lives to raising four energetic boys under the same roof.

The result is intended to offer a more personal portrait of the Rooneys than audiences have previously seen.

Disney+ has already worked with Coleen on a documentary series covering the highly publicised Wagatha Christie trial, making The Real Rooneys another project giving viewers access to an important chapter of her life.

Sean Doyle, Vice President of Unscripted for Disney+, highlighted the contrast at the heart of the new series.

“Wayne lost his job and became a top pundit and we have documented that process. And we have documented Coleen’s career skyrocketing, all along with brilliant access to the family in their beautiful home with lovely kids.”

When does The Real Rooneys premiere?

The series will consist of 10 episodes.

Episodes 1–8 will be available to stream on Disney+ from September 24, followed by two special episodes on October 1.

For Wayne and Coleen, the cameras have arrived at a moment of major transition — one where football, fashion, parenthood and family life all collide.

And if the first trailer is any indication, The Real Rooneys will be far less polished than the public image that has surrounded the family for years. It promises an unusually candid look at what happens when one football career changes course, another career takes off, and four boys ensure there is almost never a quiet moment at home.
