‘The Evidence Is There’ — Jamie Carragher Drops Tough Tottenham Transfer Theory After Newcastle Defeat. Jamie Carragher has delivered a pointed Tottenham transfer theory following their damaging defeat to Newcastle United, arguing that the evidence from the performance could reveal exactly where Spurs still need to strengthen. The former Liverpool defender did not hold back as he assessed Tottenham’s shortcomings, with the defeat raising fresh questions over the squad’s quality and the decisions being made in the transfer market. One defeat. One uncomfortable theory. And Carragher believes the evidence is already staring Tottenham’s bosses in the face.

Jamie Carragher Sends Blunt Tottenham Warning After Newcastle Defeat

Jamie Carragher believes Tottenham Hotspur’s blunt attacking display against Newcastle United has exposed an area Roberto De Zerbi may still need to address before the transfer window closes.

Spurs suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Newcastle on Saturday, failing to turn their possession into enough genuine attacking opportunities. For Carragher, the performance provided further evidence that Tottenham could require another attacking addition.

Carragher identifies Tottenham’s attacking problem

Tottenham entered their first home Premier League match of the campaign having already invested heavily in their squad this summer.

The club have brought in Savio and Omar Marmoush from Manchester City as part of their efforts to strengthen the forward line. Marmoush was handed his first start following his arrival on a temporary deal, while Savio missed the Newcastle fixture because of muscle fatigue after scoring and assisting in the Carabao Cup victory over Charlton Athletic.

Despite dominating possession for long periods, Tottenham struggled to create a serious threat.

The clearest opportunity of the first half fell to Pedro Porro, who fired over from around 12 yards. Otherwise, Spurs repeatedly controlled the ball without producing enough to seriously test Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.

Carragher believes that lack of creativity could force De Zerbi back into the market.

“They have been let down in the final third,” Carragher said.

“I think it is probably the evidence that De Zerbi will still be in the market after this game, in the next few days, for attacking reinforcements.”

He added that Tottenham had particularly struggled out wide.

“They have certainly been left a little bit short in this first half by the ability of the wide players to beat the man or do something clever or creative.”

De Zerbi leaves door open for another signing

De Zerbi had already suggested before the Newcastle game that Tottenham could make another addition before the deadline.

The Italian admitted he had not expected such an extensive transfer window but indicated that one more signing remained possible.

“I didn’t expect a market like we have done. I think we can do one player more and in one specific position,” he said.

De Zerbi revealed that he had recently discussed the situation with the club’s hierarchy, including owner, chief executive Vinai Venkatesham, sporting director Johan Lange and Enrico Venturelli.

The manager also left open the possibility of departures affecting Tottenham’s final business.

“It can be possible out or in. The transfer market is crazy and we have to be able to find the new players,” he explained.

“If some players go out, leave, or to make another player (come in), I don’t know.”

De Zerbi remains pleased with the work Tottenham have completed so far, despite acknowledging that the final day could still bring changes.

“We are very happy with the market we have done until now. It has been more than my expectation at the beginning. We have to see in the last day of the market what can happen with him.”

Tottenham’s spending spree approaches £300m

Spurs have spent heavily during the summer, with their overall investment understood to be around £300million.

Yet Saturday’s defeat demonstrated that spending does not automatically resolve every weakness.

Tottenham had plenty of the ball against Newcastle but lacked the invention required to turn that territorial advantage into goals.

The timing is significant, with the transfer deadline fast approaching and De Zerbi now having only a short window in which to decide whether his squad requires one final attacking reinforcement.

His selection also raised questions, with Kevin Danso, Pape Matar Sarr and Richarlison all absent from the matchday plans.

All three have been linked with potential moves during the transfer window, while Sunderland have reportedly seen a loan proposal for Danso rejected.

De Zerbi has previously made his position on unsettled players clear.

“I’ve been very clear with every player. If you speak clearly at the beginning you can’t expect a surprise,” he said.

“The players who want to leave, they left. Maybe we have some players who want to leave and they are waiting for the offer. We are waiting for the offer.”

His message was equally direct to anyone considering an exit.

“To stay here, they have to feel proud and happy.”

And if a player wants to leave without finding a suitable offer, De Zerbi insisted that responsibility ultimately rests with them.

“If you want to leave and you have not found the offer, it’s your problem, not my problem,” he said.

“I give respect, I kiss you, I hug you, but at the end [they] have to stay calm inside the dressing room. And not to speak too much because the rules have been clear.”

After a summer of major investment, Tottenham now face a crucial final stretch of the transfer window.

Carragher’s assessment suggests the Newcastle defeat may have exposed precisely why De Zerbi could still be searching for one more attacking player before the deadline.
