Viorica and Mihai Georgescu had waited twenty-five years to find out what had happened to their twins.
The babies had disappeared from the maternity ward just two days after they were born. A woman dressed in a medical uniform had entered the ward claiming they needed to be taken for a check-up. The surveillance cameras had not been working, and the nurse on duty had stated that she had not sent anyone to look for them.
The police had found an abandoned stroller near the train station, but no sign of the children.
The little girl wore a gold teardrop-shaped pendant with a red stone in the center. The jewelry had belonged to Viorica’s mother and had the twins’ birth date engraved on the back.
The boy was wearing a bracelet with the same date engraved on it.
For years, Viorica and Mihai had published photos, offered rewards, and checked every piece of information. None of the leads had led to the children.
Three years after her disappearance, the two met Irina in a foster home. The little girl had been found alone in a train station, without documents, and the woman who had abandoned her had not been identified.
Viorica immediately felt a connection with her.
Later documents estimated that Irina was almost a year younger than the missing twins. For this reason, no one had considered the possibility that she was the kidnapped daughter.
Viorica and Mihai had adopted her and raised her as their own child. They had never hidden the truth about the adoption from her, but neither had they told her all the details of the twins’ disappearance.
They feared that Irina might have thought she had been chosen only to replace the lost children.
At twenty-eight, Irina was to marry Radu Marinescu, a well-known architect during the renovation of the family home.
Radu had also been adopted.

The woman who raised him, Sabina Marinescu, claimed that she had taken him into her care from a relative who could not support him. His birth certificate had been issued late and contained several corrections, but Radu had never tried to find his biological parents.
On the evening of the engagement party, Viorica notices a new piece of jewelry around Irina’s neck.
It was a fine gold necklace. At its center was a teardrop-shaped pendant with a red stone.
Viorica approached and touched the edge of the jewel. On the left side there was a tiny scratch that she remembered perfectly.
— Where did you get this necklace, honey?
Irina smiled and picked up the pendant to look at it.
— Radu’s mother gave it to me, as a family dowry.
Viorica turned the jewel over.
On the back was the twins’ birth date.
The woman put her hand to her mouth and turned to her husband.
— Mihai… it’s the pendant of our kidnapped little girl!
Mihai approaches and checks the inscription. His face changes immediately.
Radu had the same date of birth listed in his documents.
— Radu is… her twin brother?!
Irina instinctively moved away from the necklace.
There was no sound in the living room. Radu had left a few minutes earlier to answer a call and was not in the room.
“What kidnapped little girl?” Irina asked.
Viorica told him the whole story for the first time. She showed him the photo taken in the maternity ward and the certificate she kept on her phone.
In the picture, the pendant was around the little girl’s neck.
There could be no confusion. The shape of the stone, the scratch, and the engraving were identical.
“Maybe Sabina bought it later,” Irina said. “Maybe she doesn’t know where it came from.”
Viorica immediately called Radu’s mother.
The phone was off.
Irina tried in turn, but to no avail. That morning, Sabina had come to the mansion, given her the necklace, and asked her not to take it off until the end of the party.
He had said something else that Irina had not considered important:
“If Viorica recognizes him, don’t let Mihai open it.”
The pendant looked compact, but Mihai knew it hid a mechanism. He pressed the red stone, and the back opened.
Inside was a tiny photo of the two newborns.
A piece of paper had recently been inserted under the photo.
“Irina, before you marry Radu, ask for a DNA test. You are not allowed to find out the truth after the wedding.”
Irina felt like she couldn’t move her hands anymore.
Radu and she had been adopted, were almost the same age, and his mother owned the kidnapped child’s pendant.
“Why didn’t he tell me directly?” Irina asked. “Why did he put the message in my necklace?”
Mihai replied that Sabina could be the woman who had taken the children. If he had known the truth for twenty-five years, offering the pendant was not a random gesture.
Irina tried to contact Radu again. He didn’t answer either.
In the room where he had left his coat, Mihai found an old photo. Radu appeared at the age of about three, holding Sabina’s hand.
A metal bracelet was visible on the boy’s wrist.
It was identical to the one worn by the missing twin.
Viorica wanted to call the police immediately, but Irina stopped her. Before they could press charges, they needed evidence.
In a box of childhood items, the family kept the bonnet and a lock of hair cut from the little girl in the maternity ward. The sample could be compared with Irina’s DNA.
Mihai had also kept a biological trace of the boy, taken during the initial investigation.
The tests were ordered urgently.
Until the results were received, the engagement was suspended. Irina and Radu agreed to live separately, although neither knew how to talk about the possibility that they were brothers.
Radu claimed he knew nothing about the pendant. Sabina had disappeared from her home, and all the photos from his early childhood had been taken.
The police found two fake birth certificates and an old map in the apartment with the maternity home marked on it.
In a drawer was a photo of Sabina dressed in a medical uniform.
She was the woman caught by a witness near the living room from which the twins had disappeared.
The DNA results arrived after four days.
Irina was the biological daughter of Viorica and Mihai.
The child adopted after the disappearance was their own kidnapped daughter. Her birth date had been altered and the mark on her shoulder had been hidden in a fake medical report.
Viorica burst into tears. The woman had raised her own daughter without knowing she had found her.
Radu’s result remained.
The analysis proved that he and Irina were not twins.
Radu had no biological connection to Viorica or Mihai.
The wedding did not unite two brothers.
But Irina’s real twin was still missing.
“Then why did Radu have his bracelet?” Viorica asked.
Radu remembered that Sabina made him wear it in all his childhood photos. She probably wanted his family to think that if they found him, they had recovered the missing boy.
In reality, Radu had been used to hide another identity.
Mihai researched the documents discovered in Sabina’s apartment and found a bank transfer made every year, on the day the children disappeared.
The money came from a company that had belonged to his older brother, Sorin.
Sorin had died ten years earlier, but the transfers had continued.
In the company’s archives there was a recent photograph of a man who looked strikingly like Mihai in his youth. He was twenty-five years old and wore the original bracelet of his missing twin on his wrist.
His name was Rareș Stoica.
He lived less than fifty kilometers from the mansion.
Viorica and Mihai went to the indicated address, but the apartment had been vacated just a few hours before. An invitation to Irina’s engagement party was left on the table.
Someone had circled the time at which Viorica had noticed the necklace.
The young man had been there.
Surveillance footage showed him entering through the back door and descending into the mansion’s basement. There was no recording of him leaving the property.
Mihai, Viorica, Irina and Radu returned and searched the cellar. Behind an old cupboard they found a partially bricked-up door.
Beyond it was a room that Mihai knew nothing about.
On the walls were photos of Irina, taken throughout her entire life: the first day of school, graduation, meeting Radu, and preparations for the engagement.
Someone had been following her for years.
In the center of the room was a tape recorder.
Sabina’s voice was heard clearly:
“If you found the room, it means Irina got the pendant. Radu is not her brother. He was just the child you were supposed to see.”
The recording stopped.
Viorica’s phone immediately received a message from an unknown number:
“Don’t let Mihai find the boy. He knows why the twins were taken.”
Viorica looked at her husband.
Mihai didn’t seem surprised by the message.
In the pocket of his coat was a photo of Rareș, taken only two weeks before.
“Did you find him before us?” Viorica asked.
Mihai did not answer.
Three knocks were heard from behind the cellar door.
A young voice said:
— Dad, tell them why you left me at Sabina’s.
