Michael Weatherly’s Tony DiNozzo Is Officially Back in NCIS Season 24 — And His Warning Suggests Something ‘Very Bad’ Is Coming

Tony DiNozzo is walking back into NCIS headquarters — but Michael Weatherly’s long-awaited return appears to involve much more than nostalgia, jokes and reunions with old friends.

The first trailer for NCIS Season 24 confirms Weatherly will return as Tony for a season-long arc, bringing the former “very special agent” back into the orbit of Tim McGee, Nick Torres and the rest of the team.

And while Tony is clearly still Tony, one ominous moment in the preview suggests his return could be connected to a much larger threat.

“Something bad is coming down the pike,” he warns McGee. “Very bad. Some very smart people are very worried about it.”

Whatever Tony knows, it could become one of Season 24’s biggest mysteries.

Weatherly’s appearance immediately delivers a moment designed for longtime fans.

Tony steps into the elevator alongside McGee, played by Sean Murray, and Torres, played by Wilmer Valderrama.

Looking around at the familiar surroundings, he jokes: “Oh, the orange walls, very special non-agent Anthony DiNozzo is back.”

The line does more than acknowledge that Tony is no longer an NCIS agent.

It also calls back to Season 8 episode “Baltimore,” which explored DiNozzo’s history and showed the first steps that eventually led him to join NCIS.

Years later, he is back in the same building — only this time without the badge.

Tony later tells McGee that he is a changed man.

“It’s a new me,” he declares after Torres recalls a story he has heard about the legendary former agent.

Whether McGee actually believes that remains another question.

Tony’s warning to McGee is deliberately vague, but its wording makes the threat sound serious.

The trailer confirms Torres survived the Season 23 cliffhanger

Tony is not the only character whose appearance delivers important information.

Torres is alive.

Season 23 ended with uncertainty surrounding his fate, but Valderrama appears alongside McGee and Tony in the new trailer, confirming that Torres survives the cliffhanger.

The preview does not immediately reveal all the circumstances surrounding his survival or what consequences the previous season’s events will have for him.

But his presence means the core team will have another familiar face available as the new threat develops.

Palmer wants to celebrate a ‘new era’ — Parker has other ideas

Not everything in the Season 24 trailer is ominous.

Brian Dietzen’s Jimmy Palmer decides the team should celebrate what he calls a new era at NCIS and arrives with cake.

Gary Cole’s Parker is less enthusiastic.

“I’m the morning sweets guy,” Parker tells the chief medical examiner. “You trying to muscle in on my territory?”

Any chance of a leisurely celebration disappears almost immediately when Parker announces that there is a dead body.

It is a characteristically NCIS transition: one moment the team is arguing about cake, the next they have another murder to investigate.

The scene also suggests that despite the major changes and returning characters, Season 24 will retain the humor that has remained central to the series.

Tony and Parker finally get their own moment

Another intriguing element of Weatherly’s return is the opportunity to see Tony interact with characters who were not part of the team during his original tenure.

Parker is the most obvious example.

Tony spent most of his NCIS career working under Leroy Jethro Gibbs, while Parker eventually became the leader of the current team.

That combination may ultimately be the key to Weatherly’s Season 24 arc: allowing Tony to remain instantly recognizable while showing how far he has come since leaving the agency.

And if his warning about something “very bad” approaching is as serious as it sounds, Tony may not have much time to enjoy his homecoming.

The orange walls are still there.

McGee is still there.

And Anthony DiNozzo is back.

This time, though, he may be bringing one of the biggest threats NCIS has faced with him.
