£96,000 Was Riding on This… The Final Puzzle Looked Like A Simple Word Search, But Only ONE Contestant Spotted What Was Hiding In The Grid

Contestant bags £96k on The 1% Club after cracking the PIN puzzle that left viewers arguing it was ‘just a word search’

A lucky player walked away with a life-changing £96,000 on The 1% Club after solving a deceptively simple-looking final question that left many at home (and a couple of his rivals) scratching their heads.

Hosted by the ever-sharp Lee Mack, the ITV hit tests 100 contestants with logic and common-sense questions that get progressively harder. Only those who can answer a question that just 1% of the public get right stand a chance of joining the exclusive club and scooping the jackpot.

On this particular episode, three players made it all the way to the final round. All of them decided to risk it for the big prize rather than take a safer share. The question that stood between them and the money was this:

“I keep forgetting my four-digit PIN number. I know each digit is higher than the previous digit but I need this diagram to remember it. What is my four-digit PIN number?”

What followed was a grid of letters that looked completely random at first glance:

E O N E P C I T
F S M I X K H L
O E F G X G P F
U J O H I V F K
R N H T N I N E

With just 30 seconds on the clock, contestants had to spot what was hidden in plain sight.

The answer? 1489.

Puzzle to find a four-digit PIN using a letter grid; the answer is 1489.

Buried in the letter grid were the words ONE, FOUR, EIGHT and NINE. Put the corresponding digits together in ascending order and you get the PIN: 1-4-8-9.

Only one of the three remaining players, Dominic, locked in the correct answer. He became the newest member of the 1% Club and took home the entire £96,000 prize pot.

Lee Mack confirmed the solution on air, revealing how the number words were spelled out across the diagram. One of the other finalists had the right digits but in the wrong order, while the third got it completely wrong.

The reaction from viewers was immediate and divided. While some praised Dominic’s calm performance under pressure, others took to social media claiming the final question was far easier than earlier rounds.

“That one per cent question was just a word search puzzle,” one fan wrote. Another added: “Yeah that was a question of speed more than anything.” A few even called it the “easiest 1% question ever.”

Not everyone agreed, though. Some pointed out that under the pressure of the ticking clock and the bright studio lights, spotting the hidden number words wasn’t as straightforward as it seemed from the sofa. One viewer admitted their nine-year-old child spotted it faster than they did.

Either way, Dominic kept his cool, spotted the sequence, and walked away a very wealthy man.

Could you have found 1489 in time?
