Only Connect viewers divided after contestant explains why she did not know answer

The BBC quiz show’s notoriously difficult questions left contestants struggling, but one young player’s explanation for missing a music connection sparked a particularly strong reaction from viewers.

Only Connect is famous for testing contestants with connections that can be almost impossible to spot at first glance. In the latest episode, however, it was one contestant’s response after missing an answer that caught the attention of viewers at home.

Hosted by Victoria Coren Mitchell, the BBC quiz featured the teams Whitley Bays and Oh No, They Didn’t. The episode included a visual clues round in which contestants had to work out what apparently unrelated images had in common.

The clues that left both teams stumped

The moment came during round two, when Ruth Erdal, Jess Volpe and Steve Erdal of the Whitley Bays were presented with their first set of clues.

The opening image showed Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting The Starry Night. It was followed by an image featuring blue and grey squares, while the final picture showed a group of people enjoying a summer day in a park.

With the clues seemingly pointing in completely different directions, the Whitley Bays struggled to find the connection.

Their answer was “sugar cube”, but it was incorrect.

Victoria then passed the question to the opposing team, made up of students Lizzie Riley and George Dickenson, along with graduate Diya Shah.

They were unable to solve it either.

Only after both teams had failed did Victoria reveal the connection: “Vincent.”

The answer referred to “Vincent,” the hit song by Don McLean, which is associated with van Gogh and includes references that matched the clues shown to the contestants.

Victoria appeared surprised that the first team had not managed to make the connection.

Turning back to the Whitley Bays, she said: “I thought you were going to get that!”

Lizzie Riley’s reaction sparks criticism

The attention then shifted to the Oh No, They Didn’t team.

Victoria noticed that Lizzie Riley appeared to be looking blank after the answer was revealed. When asked about it, Lizzie explained that she had never heard of the song.

She then added: “I was born in 2004.”

That brief explanation produced a noticeable reaction from Victoria, who appeared to wince.

The remark also divided viewers watching at home, with some taking to social media to complain about what they regarded as an unnecessary excuse on a quiz show built around broad general knowledge.

One viewer wrote: “Someone born in 2004 is on this show… I’m out!”

Another was more critical, writing: “I was born in 2004 so I wouldn’t know. Why? WHY would you go on a high-brow quiz show if you are going to use that age-old excuse? Annoying.”

A third viewer expressed their frustration more broadly, writing: “Kids today so self absorbed can’t give an answer to anything before their age!”

The reaction was echoed in online discussion about the episode, although not every viewer interpreted Lizzie’s comment as a complaint. Some argued that she was simply explaining why the song was unfamiliar to her rather than objecting to the question itself.

Could you have spotted the connection?

The exchange highlighted exactly what makes Only Connect so challenging.

Contestants are regularly asked to identify links between clues that initially appear to have little in common. A single clue can be enough to unlock the answer, but if that connection is missed, even several seemingly obvious images may not help.

In this case, The Starry Night was the key to Vincent, pointing towards Don McLean’s song about van Gogh. Yet neither team managed to reach the answer before Victoria revealed it.

The episode subsequently prompted a wider debate among viewers about age, general knowledge and what contestants should reasonably be expected to know on a quiz such as Only Connect. Some viewers considered the “I was born in 2004” explanation irritating, while others felt it was a perfectly understandable reason for not recognising an older song.

Either way, the question proved difficult for both teams, leaving viewers with their own challenge: would you have recognised “Vincent” from the clues before the answer was revealed?
