Victoria Coren Mitchell’s Surprisingly Generous Judging Left Only Connect Viewers Stunned. After Accepting Several Vague Answers From Too Many Cookes — Including “Frogmarch And Bull Or Bear Market” — She Even Promised To Be “Lenient” With The Opposing Team.

Only Connect Viewers Fume At Victoria Coren Mitchell Over ‘Wrong’ Answers — ‘She’s So Lenient This Series’

Only Connect viewers were left shouting at their screens after Victoria Coren Mitchell appeared to award points for answers that fans felt were far too vague to be accepted.

Monday’s notoriously difficult BBC Two quiz saw The Pipe Dreamers go head-to-head with Too Many Cookes, but the competitive atmosphere quickly shifted when Victoria accepted a series of questionable responses from one team.

Rather than simply moving on, the host appeared to recognise that she had been generous — and promised to make things equally lenient for their opponents later in the programme.

That did little to calm viewers.

BBC Only Connect viewers were left outraged as they blasted show host Victoria Coren Mitchell for accepting 'multiple wrong answers' on the quiz programme

‘Can’t Believe She Gave Them That’

The first controversy came when Too Many Cookes were trying to solve a set of clues involving expressions containing animals.

After being prompted to give another answer, one contestant suggested “two word phrases with animal being the first word.”

Victoria accepted the response and awarded the team a point, prompting immediate frustration online.

One viewer wrote on X: “Can’t believe she’s given too many Cooke’s that one. Bad enough she gave them the one before when they didn’t know (or at least articulate) the answer.”

But just minutes into Monday's show, Victoria sparked fury among fans by seemingly awarding points for two wrong answers

Another posted: “Can’t believe Victoria gave them that film question, they had absolutely no idea.”

Others were equally unimpressed, with comments including: “VCM being very easy with accepting that answer” and “She’s so lenient this series, accepting wrong answers as being correct.”

Victoria Admits She Is Being ‘Lenient’

The criticism intensified when another answer from Too Many Cookes appeared to stretch the boundaries of what could reasonably be accepted.

The team offered “Frogmarch and bull or bear market” in response to a clue.

Victoria decided to give them the point.

Knowing she had given away points for a vague and seemingly misguided answer, Victoria attempted to salvage the quiz's fairness by promising to be 'lenient' with the other team later

“In that case I’m going to give you the point because I see where you got confused,” she explained, adding that a bull market is also known as a bull run.

Later, when the same team produced another vague response, Victoria pulled a face before saying: “I’ll take it, I’ll take it.”

She then turned to the opposing team and acknowledged exactly what she had done.

“I’m going to look for an opportunity to be lenient with you later,” she promised.

But fans were already questioning whether that was enough to keep the contest fair.

The Film Question Caused More Frustration

The final flashpoint involved a question about films with missing ratings.

Letters had been removed from movie titles, with the missing letters representing a rating.

Too Many Cookes offered “niversity challenge” after removing the letter U.

Victoria’s response again raised eyebrows.

Despite her attempt to salvage the balance, viewers were left fuming as they slammed her for being too easy on the team

One contestant explained that they were referring to the film made about University Challenge, but Victoria noted that they would ideally have wanted to hear a film title such as Up.

The moment only added to the feeling among some viewers that the standards for accepting answers had become unusually relaxed.

As one viewer put it: “these answers are so vague sometimes.”

Another simply complained: “VCM being very easy with accepting that answer.”

For a programme famous for demanding precision and lateral thinking, the debate was less about whether the teams were clever enough — and more about whether Victoria had been too generous with the points.
