‘Make It Stop’ — Only Connect Descended Into Chaos When Six Contestants Suddenly Erupted Into a Busted Singalong.

Only Connect viewers plead “make it stop” as Busted singalong brings quiz to a halt

Viewers of Only Connect were left reaching for the remote on Monday night after a routine quiz round suddenly turned into an enthusiastic group performance of Busted’s Year 3000.

The unexpected singalong came during the episode featuring The Pear Trees and The Whitley Baes, broadcast on November 17, 2025. The moment left some viewers cringing, while others described it as one of the most awkward scenes they had seen on the BBC quiz show.

Only Connect is known for its deliberately difficult questions and obscure connections, but this time it was the contestants rather than the puzzles that grabbed viewers’ attention.

Victoria Coren Mitchell on Only Connect

Victoria Coren Mitchell accidentally starts a full-volume singalong

The episode was being hosted by Victoria Coren Mitchell when the conversation turned to music.

Victoria revealed that she had never come across Busted’s Year 3000, the band’s well-known song about a futuristic world. That admission was enough to set off an unexpected reaction from the contestants.

All six competitors launched into a spirited rendition of the song, singing at full volume while Victoria watched on.

The spontaneous performance soon became one of the most talked-about moments of the episode. According to the reaction reported after the broadcast, some viewers found the whole exchange difficult to watch.

One viewer pleaded: “Oh God, make it stop.”

Another described it as “the most awkward moment ever.”

A third viewer was even more direct, writing: “I firmly believe that all contestants should be banned from singing. What on earth was that. So awkward.”

The moment was unusual enough to interrupt the normal flow of the programme, turning what had been a standard quiz round into an impromptu musical performance.

Viewers also questioned a mayor-related answer

The singing was not the only part of Monday’s episode to attract criticism.

Elsewhere in the programme, some viewers questioned Victoria’s decision to accept an answer during a picture-clue round.

The question asked: “What is the connection between these apparently random picture clues?”

The four clues shown to the contestants were:

  • Ward in Nottingham
  • Street in Birmingham
  • Rotherham in Liverpool
  • Livingstone in London

The Pear Trees team suggested that the clues referred to “Former mayors of these cities?”

Victoria then asked for further clarification.

Team captain Nick Ridgman responded: “I can go as far as Ken Livingston, I’m afraid.”

Victoria decided to accept the answer and explained her reasoning: “Well, I’ll take that answer – some of them are still mayors, the notable thing is they’re all inaugural mayors.”

That decision prompted another wave of reaction from viewers watching at home.

One complained: “They said ‘former mayors.’ That’s wrong. Never should have got that point!”

Another questioned the way the answer had been handled, writing: “Why was that mayor’s question allowed? They got it wrong. VCM just makes arbitrary decisions as she goes it should be more strict than that.”

A further viewer challenged the wording of the question itself, arguing that the references involved the West Midlands rather than Birmingham, the Liverpool City Region rather than Rotherham, and the East Midlands rather than Nottingham.

only connect

A familiar format built around difficult connections

The episode was the 18th instalment of Only Connect series 21, with The Pear Trees taking on The Whitley Baes on November 17, 2025. Episode listings confirm the teams and broadcast date.

The format asks contestants to find connections between apparently unrelated clues. The programme’s difficulty comes from the fact that the connection is often far less obvious than the individual clues themselves.

The November 17 episode followed the same format, with the teams tackling sequences, picture clues and other puzzles requiring lateral thinking. A contemporary UK game-show review also noted that Victoria revealed during the programme that she did not know Year 3000, while the episode itself remained closely focused on the teams’ attempts to solve the connections.

The episode’s place in the series was also confirmed by multiple programme guides, which list Pear Trees v Whitley Baes as series 21, episode 18, broadcast on November 17, 2025.

For many viewers, however, the puzzles were temporarily overshadowed by the sight and sound of six contestants joining together for an impromptu Busted performance.

The combination of the unexpected Year 3000 singalong and the debate over the mayor question gave Monday night’s episode plenty for viewers to discuss long after the quiz itself had moved on.
