The 1% Club viewers divided over disputed answer in gameshow episode

Viewers of The 1% Club have been left frustrated after questioning the answer given to a tricky question on the ITV gameshow.

The programme, hosted by comedian Lee Mack, challenges contestants to work their way through a series of increasingly difficult questions in the hope of being among the smartest one percent of the group.

Contestants can win up to £100,000, while viewers at home are encouraged to test themselves alongside those taking part.

Viewers question the official answer

The latest controversy centred on a question involving fingers and toes.

Contestants were asked:

“If you had eight fingers on your left hand, six fingers on your right hand, the same number of toes on your right foot as your left hand and three toes on your left foot, how many fingers and toes would you have on total?”

The answer given on the programme was 25. However, some viewers argued that the wording meant the correct answer should actually be 17.

One viewer explained their reasoning, writing: “Surely this is 17 @1PercentClubITV, ‘The same number of toes on your right foot as your left hand’ means the same number of toes on my right foot as there are toes on my left hand = 0. 8 + 6 + 0 + 3 = 17.”

Another viewer agreed, arguing that the wording was particularly problematic for a programme where carefully reading the question is central to the game.

“Given this show is all about how the questions are phrased, it’s a bit of a cock up on their part that they didn’t say ‘the same number of toes on your right foot as the number of fingers on your left hand,” they wrote.

The original poster agreed, saying they had also chosen 17 because identifying details hidden in the wording seemed to be the whole point of the questions.

Another viewer admitted they had initially selected 25, only to realise they may have misunderstood the question.

“I’m a little annoyed with myself that I got this ‘correct’ with 25. Because you are spot on, and the answer should have been 17 phrased as it is,” they wrote.

A further viewer said they had also chosen 25 before reading the question again and deciding that 17 appeared to be the correct answer.

Independent adjudicator reportedly involved

The disagreement was significant enough that, according to a post on the Digital Spy forum, an independent adjudicator was called in.

The forum user claimed: “The independent adjudicator had to be called in on this one cos someone gave an answer about this. Their answer was accepted.”

According to the report, 17 was ultimately accepted as a correct answer by the independent adjudicator.

The dispute comes after viewers had already raised concerns about another alleged error involving an answer on the show earlier in the same week.
