Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s First U.K. Outing Draws Attention to Their Body Language
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first public appearance together since returning to the U.K. has attracted attention for a reason that goes beyond their decision to stop for lunch at a country pub.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were photographed holding hands as they arrived at The Falkland Arms in Great Tew, Oxfordshire, on October 1. The casual outing marked the first time the couple had been photographed together in Britain since returning with their family in August.
At first glance, the images appeared to show Harry and Meghan enjoying an ordinary afternoon together. Both dressed casually, they walked toward the Cotswolds pub hand in hand before heading inside for lunch.

But the photographs quickly prompted a different discussion. Journalist Rob Shutter claimed on his Substack that the images may have been the result of a planned photo opportunity rather than an unexpected paparazzi encounter.
According to Shutter, sources close to the couple told Naughty But Nice that the circumstances surrounding the photographs were anything but accidental. He argued that the positioning of Harry and Meghan, particularly the unobstructed view of them holding hands, suggested that they wanted to be photographed together.
The claim remains an allegation rather than an established fact. Other coverage of the outing simply described the couple as being photographed during a low-key lunch date.
A Body Language Expert Sees Something Different
The suggestion that the photographs were carefully arranged is only part of the story. Body language expert Inbaal Honigman has offered another interpretation, saying the pictures do not necessarily present the polished image of marital harmony that some viewers might expect.
Honigman, who has spent more than two decades appearing in the media to discuss body language and pop culture figures, has contributed her expertise to outlets including Big Brother’s Little Brother, Elle Magazine and talkSPORT radio.
Speaking exclusively to Showbiz Cheat Sheet on behalf of Casino.ca, Honigman said Harry and Meghan appeared to display noticeably different body language throughout their walk to the pub.
She observed that the couple rarely seemed physically or visually synchronized. At one point, Harry was looking straight ahead while Meghan was pointing and looking to the side. Honigman interpreted the difference as potentially reflecting separate areas of attention or focus.

Their contrasting movements continued as they approached the pub. Meghan was seen holding a hand protectively in front of her upper body, while Harry walked with longer strides, his arms moving casually at his sides.
For Honigman, the contrast was striking enough to suggest that the couple might not have been completely in step with one another during the outing.
She also pointed to a moment when Harry touched his ear, which she described as a sudden indication of discomfort. Meghan, meanwhile, maintained what appeared to be a calm and neutral expression.
Honigman said the overall impression was of two people whose body language was unusually disconnected from each other, describing it as potentially indicative of a period of disharmony within their household.
That interpretation should be viewed as an expert opinion rather than proof of problems in the couple’s relationship. Body language can be affected by circumstances, environment and cultural differences, and a single public appearance cannot establish what is happening privately between two people.

The Distance Between Harry and Meghan Stands Out
The moment that drew the strongest attention from Honigman came as Harry and Meghan crossed a hedge and continued along the path toward the pub.
Rather than walking closely beside his wife, Harry remained several paces behind her.
Honigman considered that distance significant from a body language perspective. She explained that a husband walking beside his partner can communicate support and availability, while positioning himself only slightly behind her can suggest that he is there to support her and has her back.
In her view, the larger gap between Harry and Meghan created a noticeably different impression.
The observation stands in contrast to the more affectionate details that initially dominated coverage of the outing. The couple were holding hands, appeared casually dressed and were photographed heading into a traditional Cotswolds pub for lunch. Other reports described them as behaving like ordinary customers during their visit.
Their meal also reflected the informal nature of the visit. Meghan reportedly ordered gluten-free beer-battered haddock and chips, while Harry chose chicken, ham and leek pie.
Yet the photographs have produced competing interpretations. To some, they show Harry and Meghan settling into their new life in Britain and enjoying a quiet lunch together. To others, the carefully composed images and the couple’s contrasting body language invite questions about the message being conveyed.
For Honigman, the most notable feature was not the hand-holding but the lack of physical synchronization between the two.
Ultimately, the photographs offer only a brief glimpse of Harry and Meghan during one afternoon in Oxfordshire. Claims that the outing was staged remain unproven, while the suggestion that their body language reveals marital friction is an interpretation rather than an established fact.
What is clear is that their first joint appearance since returning to the U.K. has generated considerably more discussion than an ordinary pub lunch might normally receive.
