The 1% Club contestant gambles £10,000 and misses out on £96,000 jackpot after final question
A The 1% Club contestant came agonisingly close to a £96,000 jackpot after answering every question correctly, only to see his winning run end on the final puzzle.
Brett had already secured the chance to walk away with £10,000, but decided to risk the money for the opportunity to take home the much larger prize.
The decision left host Lee Mack, 56, watching closely as Brett faced the show’s notoriously difficult 1% question.

Brett takes the gamble
The ITV quiz show tests contestants with questions based on common sense and little-known facts. As the game progresses, the questions become increasingly difficult, with players eliminated round by round.
Eventually, just one contestant is left to tackle the final question, which is designed to be answered correctly by only 1% of the public.
Brett had managed to get every previous answer right, putting him in a position to compete for the jackpot.
When the final round arrived, he had the option of taking £10,000 and leaving the game. Instead, he chose to gamble the money and attempt to win £96,000.
The challenge appeared simple at first. Brett was asked to find the same four-letter word that could be inserted into three different sentences while keeping each sentence meaningful.
He was given 30 seconds to work it out.
But as the clock counted down, Brett appeared increasingly unsure. He struggled to find the connection between the three sentences and ultimately ran out of time without being confident in his answer.
“I didn’t know it. I put last. I just couldn’t see it,” he explained to Lee Mack.
Unfortunately for Brett, the answer he gave was wrong.

Could you have worked out the answer?
The four-letter word Lee was looking for was “only.”
With the correct answer, the three sentences would read:
“Only I am certain that he read the man’s notes.”
“I am certain that only he had read the man’s notes.”
“I am certain that he had read the man’s only notes.”

The answer was revealed after Brett failed to solve the puzzle, prompting gasps and shocked reactions from the audience as they realised that the potential £96,000 jackpot had slipped away.
Lee Mack then reassured Brett after the difficult final round, acknowledging how far he had managed to get in the competition.
“Brett, unlucky. That was a big gamble.
“You did brilliant to get this far and you have of course got your £1,000. So congratulations.
“Unfortunately you didn’t make it into the 1% Club, but you can walk away knowing that you did better than the rest of the people in this room tonight, so well done you!”

Although Brett missed out on the jackpot, he had successfully made it through every earlier stage of the game before being stopped by the final puzzle.
The £96,000 prize ultimately remained out of reach after his decision to gamble rather than take the £10,000 he had been offered.
The 1% Club continues on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
