San Quentin Prison Nurse Dee Dee Simon Stuns America’s Got Talent with Powerhouse Dreamgirls Showstopper
Dee Dee Simon spends her daily shifts caring for incarcerated men inside California’s notorious San Quentin Rehabilitation Center. But when she stepped onto the America’s Got Talent stage, the registered nurse delivered a powerhouse vocal performance that brought the entire auditorium and judging panel to their feet.
Tackling “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”—the legendary showstopper from the Broadway musical Dreamgirls popularized by Jennifer Holliday and Jennifer Hudson—Simon took on one of the most vocally taxing anthems in modern theatre. With raw emotion, commanding control, and blistering high notes, she turned the audition into an instant season highlight.
A High-Stakes Day Job and an Unlikely Backstory
While Simon’s delivery carried the poise of an industry veteran, singing has long taken a back seat to her healthcare career. Working within the high-security walls of San Quentin, she previously witnessed firsthand how intensely music can affect people in extreme environments.
During her introduction, Simon drew laughter and disbelief from the judges when recalling the very first time she sang for the prison population:
“After I sang a song, a riot broke out,” she confessed with a grin. “Then I had to triage everybody.”
The incident made her wary of performing at work for years, though she noted she finally sang again in the yard months prior to her audition—this time leaving the yard completely peaceful.
Kicking Off Her Shoes for a Classic Ballad
Taking on the character of Effie White, Simon built the song from quiet desperation to an explosive, soul-stirring crescendo. Mid-performance, she kicked off her high heels on stage, dropping to the floor to deliver the ballad’s soaring final phrases with total vocal abandon.
The auditorium erupted into standing ovations from the crowd and all four judges—Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel.
Unanimous Acclaim from the Judges
The panel praised both her technique and emotional conviction:
Sofia Vergara:Hailed the performance as “spectacular,” telling Simon: “You know it’s coming from your soul. It was a beautiful treat to have you here tonight.”
Heidi Klum:Commended her grit: “It was just incredible. It was just building and getting better. Then the shoes came off and you were just down on the floor giving it your all.”
Simon Cowell: Known for being tough on theatrical vocal standards, Cowell was unequivocal in his review: “You picked one of the hardest songs in the world and you absolutely nailed it.”
With four enthusiastic “Yes” votes, Simon secured a unanimous ticket to the next round of competition.
Viral Reception
Simon’s audition quickly struck a chord beyond the studio walls, racking up over a million views online within days of its broadcast. Balancing the emotional demands of clinical nursing in maximum security with a world-class singing voice, Dee Dee Simon proved that true talent cannot remain hidden behind prison gates.
