Soulful Country Clash: Queen Latifah Names Battle Winner After ‘Magical’ ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ Duet on ‘The Voice’
The Battle Rounds on Season 30 of NBC’s The Voice delivered an emotional showcase as Team Queen Latifah vocalists Luke Cope and BigCountry went head-to-head on Chris Stapleton’s modern classic, “Tennessee Whiskey.”
Mentored by both Queen Latifah and R&B icon Patti LaBelle during rehearsals, the pairing merged pure traditional country tones with deep Southern soul, drawing unanimous praise across the coaches’ panel before Latifah made her final selection.
The Rehearsal & Vocal Dynamic: Mentored by Patti LaBelle
The track—originally written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove, recorded by David Allan Coe in 1981, and famously redefined by Chris Stapleton on his 2015 breakthrough album Traveller—provided a complementary canvas for the two distinct stylists:
-
The Blend: Rather than turning the matchup into a shouting match, the duo prioritized tight, soulful vocal harmonies that elevated the melody.
-
The Contrast: Cope delivered crisp, soaring country high harmonies, while BigCountry anchored the low end with a resonant, blues-inflected delivery.
-
The Mentorship: Working alongside guest advisor Patti LaBelle, both artists focused on vocal restraint and emotional resonance over unnecessary runs.
Coaching Panel Reactions
| Coach | Feedback & Observations |
| Adam Levine | Highlighted the vocal cohesion, describing their dual harmonies as nothing short of “magical.” |
| Kelly Clarkson | Praised how smoothly their voices locked together without competing for dominance. |
| Riley Green | Admitted he would personally lean toward Luke Cope due to the difficulty and clarity of the upper-register harmonies he executed. |
| Queen Latifah | Commended Cope’s remarkable technical growth from the Blind Auditions while highlighting BigCountry’s magnetic stage authority. |
The Decision: BigCountry Advances to the Knockouts
Faced with eliminating one of her core male vocalists, Queen Latifah chose BigCountry to advance to the Knockout Rounds, citing his unshakeable charisma and commanding stage presence:
“Luke improved by leaps and bounds, but BigCountry is a presence, a force to be reckoned with. So comfortable, so confident, full of energy, life and voice and ability. He is somebody everybody loved from the beginning.”
While Cope’s journey on Season 30 concluded following the performance, his marked improvement throughout rehearsals earned strong respect from the panel.
