Look at the picture for a second and count them. How many squares can you actually see? The first few are easy. You spot the 16 obvious squares in the 4×4 grid, then notice another 16 smaller ones sitting inside them. That gives you 32. Surely that has to be the answer… right? This is where people start disagreeing. Some will stop at 32 and say there’s nothing else to count. Others will immediately start looking at the bigger shapes made by joining several boxes together. And once you do that, the number suddenly starts getting a lot harder to keep track of. You have just 30 seconds, so there’s barely enough time to question your first answer, let alone check every possible square hiding in the image. And that’s what makes this The 1% Club puzzle so frustrating — the answer feels obvious until someone points out what you missed.

The 1% Club’s “How Many Squares?” Puzzle Looks Easy — Until You Realize How Many You’ve Missed

A 4×4 grid, 16 small boxes and 30 seconds. It sounds like an easy challenge, but The 1% Club has a habit of turning simple-looking puzzles into surprisingly difficult tests of observation.

The question appears straightforward:

“How many squares are there in this image?”

At first, the obvious answer seems to be 32. There are 16 squares making up the main grid, plus another 16 smaller squares inside them.

But that is only part of the puzzle.

The real challenge is spotting all the larger squares created by combining the smaller sections. Once those are included, the total becomes much higher.

Start with the squares you can see

The main design is a 4×4 grid, which immediately gives you:

  • 16 individual 1×1 squares

Each of those grid sections also contains a smaller square, adding another:

  • 16 smaller squares

That brings the running total to:

16 + 16 = 32

It is an easy place to stop — and exactly where the puzzle starts to catch people out.

The larger squares change everything

The individual boxes can be grouped together to form larger squares.

Within the 4×4 grid, there are nine 2×2 squares. These can be positioned in three ways across the grid and three ways down:

3 × 3 = 9

That takes the running total to:

32 + 9 = 41

But there are still more to find.

Four 3×3 squares

The grid also contains four different 3×3 squares:

  • top-left
  • top-right
  • bottom-left
  • bottom-right

Adding those brings the count to:

41 + 4 = 45

And finally, the entire 4×4 grid forms one large square of its own.

That makes the total:

46 squares
