Scott McTominay Set for Heart Procedure as Napoli Confirm ‘Mild’ Arrhythmia

Scott McTominay is facing a short spell on the sidelines after Napoli confirmed that the former Manchester United midfielder will undergo a heart procedure to correct a “mild benign arrhythmia.”

The 29-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable spell in Italy since leaving Old Trafford, but his impressive run with Napoli has now been interrupted by the medical issue.

Napoli confirmed on Tuesday that McTominay will undergo cardiac arrhythmia ablation using pulsed field ablation (PFA) in the coming days.

“Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) in the coming days,” the club said.

“He will be available again after the international break.”

The condition has reportedly been described as mild and is not expected to threaten McTominay’s playing career.

McTominay’s remarkable Napoli rise

McTominay came through the Manchester United academy and went on to make 255 appearances for the club after breaking into the first team during the 2016/17 season.

The Scotland international scored 29 goals during his time at Old Trafford before moving to Napoli in 2024 for a reported £25million.

His career in Serie A has since flourished.

McTominay has scored 27 goals in 82 appearances for Napoli and played a key role in their Serie A title triumph last season, establishing himself as an important figure in the team.

He has also become a regular for Scotland, earning 73 international caps and scoring 15 goals.

Blisters had already limited his training

McTominay’s latest appearance came during Napoli’s weekend defeat at home to Como.

Following the match, manager Massimiliano Allegri suggested that the midfielder had been dealing with blisters and had consequently been training on a limited basis.

“McTominay had some problems with blisters, so he’s been training on a limited basis,” Allegri said. “Hopefully, we can get him into the best possible condition as soon as possible.”

Napoli have now confirmed that the arrhythmia will require a separate procedure, meaning McTominay will miss the club’s upcoming fixtures.

Napoli face a busy schedule

The Italian champions have four matches to navigate before the next international break.

Their immediate challenge is a meeting with Inter Milan on Saturday, followed by a Champions League clash against Premier League champions Arsenal.

Napoli will then face Bologna at home before travelling to take on Fiorentina.

After winning their opening game and losing their second, Napoli currently sit 10th in Serie A.

If his recovery progresses as expected, McTominay could potentially return against Frosinone on October 10.

A major summer of change

Napoli have undergone significant changes after finishing as runners-up last season.

Antonio Conte has departed as manager, with Allegri taking charge, while the club has also seen several notable players leave, including Miguel Gutierrez, Romelu Lukaku and Giovanni Simeone.

They have nevertheless remained active in the transfer market, making Rasmus Hojlund’s move permanent and bringing Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile to the club on a season-long loan.

For now, however, Napoli’s focus will be on ensuring McTominay makes a full recovery.

The midfielder has been one of the standout success stories of his move to Italy, and with the club expecting him back after the international break, the priority is now getting him safely through the procedure and back on the pitch.
