Carson Daly’s Emotional Irish Homecoming Takes An Unexpected Turn As ‘Today’ Reveals A Family Surprise Live On Air
Carson Daly returned to Ireland for a special episode of NBC’s Today — but what began as a journey into his family history turned into a deeply personal reunion he never expected.
During the show’s live broadcast from County Kerry on Friday, October 16, Savannah Guthrie surprised Carson with a group of Irish locals who shared his surname. Among them was a distant biological cousin he had only recently discovered through a DNA connection.
The heartwarming moment brought Carson closer to his Irish roots and uncovered a remarkable story about the generations of his family who came before him.
Carson Daly Opens Up About His Irish Roots
Carson has long felt a connection to Ireland through both sides of his family.
“I am Irish on both my mom and my dad’s side,” he told viewers, explaining that he had previously visited the country with his late mother.
He fondly remembered a trip when they travelled to Slane Castle to see U2 perform, describing it as one of the greatest trips they had shared.
Now back in Ireland with Today, Carson had the opportunity to explore that heritage in greater depth.
He also spoke about losing his father, James Daly, when he was young. That loss left gaps in his understanding of the family’s history, prompting him and his sister, Quinn Daly, to investigate their ancestry.
Carson wanted to discover exactly where his family came from — and why so many people with Irish ancestry feel a powerful connection to the Emerald Isle.
The Discovery That Left Carson Amazed
To help answer those questions, Carson worked with Fiona Fitzsimons, director of the Irish Family History Center.
Unlike DNA-based genealogy services, Fitzsimons and her team use historical documents, including birth, marriage and immigration records, to trace family lines across generations.
Their research revealed that Daly is one of Ireland’s most common surnames, ranking among the country’s top 15 names.
Even more remarkably, they traced Carson’s family back to the early 1800s.
The research showed that his ancestors were coal miners who survived the Irish Potato Famine, one of the most devastating periods in the country’s history.
Carson was astonished by the discovery, reflecting on how his family’s skills and trade may have helped them survive such difficult circumstances.
He also connected the finding to advice he regularly gives his own children about the value of learning practical skills and trades.
Savannah Guthrie’s Surprise Changes Everything

After Carson’s ancestry segment aired, Savannah Guthrie revealed that the people standing behind the hosts were not simply local residents who had come to watch the programme.
Instead, they were members of the Daly family.
“We have gathered some of your local quote, unquote, Irish cousins,” Savannah explained.
The group then revealed a sign reading, “We’re the Dalys! Welcome Home, Cousin Carson!”
Carson greeted the group warmly, hugging his newly introduced relatives as the surprise unfolded on live television.
Among those present was Irish Senator Mark Daly, who presented Carson with an Irish flag and shared its historical significance.
The unexpected gathering transformed the broadcast into a personal family reunion, connecting Carson with people who shared his surname and a link to his ancestral homeland.
Meeting His Distant Biological Cousin
The surprise became even more meaningful when Savannah introduced Carson to Lorraine, a distant biological cousin on his paternal grandfather’s side.
Their connection had been established through a DNA test taken by Carson’s sister, Quinn, which helped link the family members.
During the third hour of Today, Carson chatted with Lorraine about their newly discovered relationship.
He joked that he now owed her “53 years of Christmas cards,” acknowledging the decades of family occasions they had missed before discovering their connection.
The two also found a shared interest in music. Carson has built much of his career around music television, including Total Request Live and The Voice, while one of Lorraine’s sons is an opera singer.
Carson expressed his gratitude for Lorraine making the trip to meet him, calling the encounter a special experience.
A Family History Brought To Life
For Carson, the visit was about more than learning names and dates from old records.
It gave him a chance to understand the experiences of the people who came before him, including the hardships his ancestors endured and the circumstances that eventually led their descendants to build lives elsewhere.
The discoveries also gave him a new connection to relatives he had never known existed.
What started as a search for answers about his father’s side of the family ended with an unexpected introduction to cousins in Ireland — including a biological relative whose connection had only recently come to light.
As Today continued its special broadcasts from County Kerry, Carson’s reunion offered a reminder of how family history can reach across generations and bring people together in surprising ways.
From tracing his ancestors back to the early 1800s to meeting a biological cousin on live television, Carson Daly’s Irish homecoming became far more personal than he could have imagined. 🇮🇪❤️
