Kelly Clarkson Accuses Brooklyn Store Owner Of Lying After $15,000 ‘Pretty Woman’ Dispute Escalates:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(749x0:751x2):format(webp)/Kelly-Clarkson-101126-101126-3000ab0e170542dca0b41e0d2398fd9b.jpg)
Kelly Clarkson is hitting back after a Brooklyn shop owner disputed her account of an uncomfortable shopping experience involving a $15,000 singing bird automaton. The singer accused the business of being both “rude” and dishonest after it claimed the unusual item she wanted to buy was never for sale.
The disagreement began when Clarkson visited Art of Play, a New York City shop known for its distinctive collection of games, puzzles, toys and other unusual items. What she expected to be an enjoyable shopping trip instead left her feeling judged, prompting her to compare the experience to a scene from the 1990 romantic comedy Pretty Woman.
Now, with both sides presenting different accounts of what happened, the dispute has become a public clash between the Grammy-winning singer and the independent store.
Kelly Clarkson Says She Was Made To Feel She Couldn’t Afford The Item
On Saturday, October 10, Clarkson shared her frustration after visiting the Brooklyn store. She said she had driven there because the shop looked appealing and that she had several items in mind to purchase.
However, according to Clarkson, the interaction took an uncomfortable turn when she asked about an item with a price tag of $15,000.
In a post on X, she wrote that she felt as though she had been treated as if she could not afford the merchandise. She also alleged that the person assisting her offered to find something comparable instead.
Clarkson was unhappy with the interaction and suggested that the store had lost a potentially substantial sale because of the way she felt she had been treated.
Her comparison to Pretty Woman referenced the film’s famous shopping scenes, in which Julia Roberts’ character, Vivian, encounters judgment and dismissive treatment while shopping in expensive boutiques.
The Store Offers A Different Explanation:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(999x0:1001x2):format(webp)/Kelly-Clarkson-101126-71ec33b871b34d3c994bc2a56fb9b73b.jpg)
Art of Play responded to Clarkson’s claims the following day, providing a different account of the item at the centre of the dispute.
The store said Clarkson had asked about purchasing “Molly,” a one-of-a-kind singing and dancing bird automaton that plays a role in the magic shows hosted at the business.
