Kelly Clarkson’s Brooklyn Store Dispute Takes Another Turn As Security Footage Emerges — But One Crucial Detail Has Sparked Fresh Questions
Newly released security footage has brought fresh attention to Kelly Clarkson’s heated encounter at a Brooklyn store, where a dispute over a rare mechanical singing bird worth $15,000 has escalated into a public clash between the singer and the business.
The footage, obtained by journalist Pablo Torre and shown on his podcast Pablo Torre Finds Out, captures Clarkson inside Art of Play in Brooklyn Heights during a visit that lasted just four minutes and 50 seconds.
There is no audio, meaning viewers cannot hear what was said between Clarkson and the shopkeeper. However, the footage shows the singer examining items in the store before approaching the unusual mechanical bird at the centre of the controversy.
And while the images have provided a clearer look at the encounter, they have not settled the disagreement over what actually happened.
What The Security Footage Appears To Show
Clarkson is seen browsing the store in a yellow shirt, jeans, a baseball cap and a backpack. At one point, she examines a telescope before approaching the rare automaton known as Molly.
The shopkeeper gestures towards the bird as the pair briefly interact.
He then turns away to assist another customer, and the two do not appear to speak again until Clarkson reaches the front of the store.
As she stands near the doorway, Clarkson is seen gesturing animatedly while speaking to a man at the cash register. Other customers appear to turn their attention towards the exchange.
The man points towards Molly, but Clarkson eventually leaves the shop.
Outside, she quickly takes out her phone.
Because the footage contains no sound, it cannot establish exactly what was said, whether an offer was made or how either party interpreted the interaction.
The Detail That Has Added Another Layer To The Dispute
One point highlighted by Torre was Clarkson’s clothing.
The singer was dressed casually, much like other customers visiting the store. Torre raised this detail while discussing the encounter, suggesting that the footage did not obviously show her being treated differently because of what she was wearing.
However, the silent footage cannot determine whether Clarkson felt she had been judged on her appearance or assumed to be unable to afford the item.
That distinction matters because the disagreement centres not only on what happened inside the store, but also on how the interaction was interpreted by both sides.
Why A Mechanical Singing Bird Sparked Such A Major Row
The controversy began over Molly, an unusual handmade automaton that plays a musical tune.
Clarkson claimed on social media that an employee had looked her up and down before condescendingly offering to find her a cheaper alternative. She compared the experience to the treatment Julia Roberts’ character receives in Pretty Woman.
The singer alleged that the employee had wrongly assumed she could not afford the bird, which had been listed at $15,000.
She called the employee an “idiot” and claimed the store had lost a “huge sale”.
Art of Play disputed her account, insisting that Molly was not actually for sale. The business said staff had offered to show Clarkson a different automaton priced at $2,000, but she did not take up the offer.
The store’s listing for Molly has since attracted further attention, with the price reportedly changed to $15 million.
The Store Owner Fires Back
The disagreement escalated further when Art of Play co-owner Adam Rubin spoke to Page Six about the reaction to Clarkson’s public complaints.
Rubin accused the singer of a “reprehensible abuse of power”, arguing that her social media posts had contributed to a wave of online harassment directed at the small business.
He said employees had received hundreds of threatening messages following the controversy.
“It’s a pop star, a mechanical bird, it’s surreal,” Rubin told the publication, describing the intensity of the reaction.
He also argued that the episode raised questions about the influence celebrities can have when publicly criticising small businesses.
The owners have said they attempted to contact Clarkson in hopes of resolving the dispute.
Sources Close To Clarkson Say The Reaction Was Unusual
People close to Clarkson have also offered their perspective on the incident.
An insider previously told Page Six that the singer’s public response was unusual for her, describing her as generally down-to-earth and easygoing.
The source suggested that something about the interaction must have deeply upset Clarkson for her to speak out so publicly.
However, that account reflects the perspective of someone close to the singer rather than independent evidence of what occurred inside the store.
Clarkson has also accused the business of misrepresenting the exchange, leaving both sides standing by different versions of events.
What The Footage Does — And Does Not — Prove
The newly released video offers a visual record of Clarkson’s visit and shows the brief interaction that preceded her departure.
But without audio, it cannot confirm the words exchanged, the tone of the conversation or whether the employee made the assumptions Clarkson described.
It also does not, by itself, resolve the disagreement over whether Molly was available for purchase or what alternative was offered.
For now, the dispute remains a clash between Clarkson’s account of feeling patronised and the store’s explanation of what its staff intended.
The footage has given the public a closer look at the encounter — but the most important part of the conversation remains unheard.
