Kelly Ripa confessed that she was “very concerned” for her friend, David Muir, during his recent appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark.
On Friday, July 3, the ABC World News Tonight anchor, 52, was a guest on Ripa and her husband Mark Consuelos‘ morning talk show. There, Muir discussed Disney Celebrates America, a 24-hour event that kicked off Friday night. He had the opportunity to climb 305 feet to the top of the Statue of Liberty as the U.S. marked its 250th anniversary on July 4.
“You’re doing 24 hours?” Consuelos, 55, asked, to which Muir confirmed.
“What, 24 hours? Shouldn’t you be sleeping right now?” Ripa, 55, marveled. “I’m very concerned.”
“Probably,” Muir conceded, joking, “I think I am,” as he waved his hands in front of his eyes.
The climbing of the Statue of Liberty aired on Friday, and it also featured Brandi Carlile singing “America the Beautiful” during a light show at Lady Liberty.

Ripa wasn’t the only person worried about Muir when it came to his hosting Disney Celebrates America. Ahead of climbing the Statue of Liberty, he posted a photo via Instagram of himself more than 300 feet in the air. Getting ready to take you 305 feet up,” Muir captioned his update. “We climbed up through Lady Liberty’s right arm to reach the torch.”
“Be careful, David Muir, it seems very dangerous,” one follower warned.
Another echoed, “Be careful, especially of winds!”
Meanwhile, someone else admitted, “Can’t wait. But I am so scared of heights, even if I see it on a screen.”
During his sit-down with Ripa and Consuelos, Muir recounted climbing a narrow ladder to get to the very top of Lady Liberty’s torch. He explained, “You actually hear the photograph say to me in the raw video, ‘OK, we’re good. You wanna come back down so I can get the other angle?’ I was like, ‘I’m not coming back down. We’re not doing this twice.’”
Muir also pointed out, “Here’s the crazy thing, you notice it immediately: the Lady Liberty sways. She was designed that way to withstand all of the crazy weather all of these years.”
