6 Arrested in Brazil After Woman Dies During Bungee Jump at “Skeleton Bridge”

A bungee jumping excursion at one of Brazil’s most recognized extreme sports locations turned fatal on Saturday after workers pushed a 21-year-old woman off a 130-foot bridge without attaching a safety rope — with her fiancé watching from the crowd as it happened.

What Happened at Skeleton Bridge

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas had been participating in a bungee jumping event at the Skeleton Bridge in Limeira, in the state of São Paulo. The bridge, which earned its name not because of its danger record but because it was never completed, has long been a popular location for extreme sports enthusiasts.

According to witnesses and video footage that circulated online, two workers carried Freitas onto the platform before pushing her over the edge. As she fell, someone in the crowd could be heard screaming, “Guys, the rope.” It was too late. She plummeted approximately 40 meters into a canyon below and was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.

Her fiancé, who was watching the jump from the bridge, became so distraught after witnessing the fall that he had to be taken to hospital for medical treatment.

A Warning Nobody Acted On in Time

The moment captured on video — a bystander’s shout about the missing rope as Freitas was already falling — has become the most haunting detail of an already devastating incident.

Investigators believe the bungee instructors simply forgot to attach the safety cord before pushing her off the platform. The company running the event, Entre Cordas, was reportedly operating without a license at the time.

Freitas herself had posted on social media from the bridge earlier that day, sharing photos of the event setup, equipment, and other participants. Her final post, which she wrote before her jump, has since gone viral.

“Who was the crazy person that let me jump off a bridge???” she wrote.

Six Arrested — Two Caught Hiding in the Woods

 

In the immediate aftermath of Freitas’s death, several organizers fled the scene. Authorities launched a search and, with the assistance of a military helicopter surveying a patch of woodland next to the bridge, located and apprehended two of those who had run.

Six people in total have since been arrested — five men and one woman — in connection with the incident. Three of those arrested are being charged with homicide by conditional intent, a charge applied in Brazilian law when a person is believed to have knowingly engaged in a reckless activity that could result in another’s death.

The Civil Police department is continuing its investigation and will determine what additional charges, if any, will be filed.
