Away from the Today Show, Al Roker faces the same everyday frustrations as everyone else – including the occasional run-in with the law over driving tickets.

During the July 24 installment of the NBC show, Al and his co-stars, Laura Jarrett and Willie Geist, discussed the consequences of distracted driving, including being issued tickets for checking your phone behind the wheel.

The meteorologist admitted that he had previously attended court as a result of the tickets.”I’ve got three tickets, I’ve gone to court three times and they plead it down for you, you still need to pay the fee,” explained Al. “What else is interesting, is what you see going through court as well. The other cases.”

“Al, you did it without a lawyer?” asked his co-star, to which he responded: “I consulted an attorney, he said they actually appreciate it, most courts.”

Willie made light of the discussion by making a playful joke about Al’s role as a meteorologist on NBC. “Did the judge ask you if his flights were going to take off from JFK?” he said.

“I have to give them a forecast every week,” replied Al, laughing.

Al Roker’s role on the Today Show

Al has been a member of the NBC team since 1978, when he was hired by WKYC in Cleveland. In 1996, he was finally made the regular full-time weatherman on Today. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight while celebrating over four decades with the show, Al gushed that he was even “more passionate” about the job than when he started. “I cannot tell you how much I look forward to [hosting Today]. Every day is a different day, and our audience who comes down to the Today Show, our crew, our producers, how do you give up something like this?” concluding that he’d retire until “the wheels fall off.”

The meteorologist previously spoke to HELLO! about the great dynamic he shares with his co-stars. “The great thing about the Today Show is that the sum is greater than its equal parts,” he shared. “They’ve all subbed, they’ve all stepped in, and we don’t miss a beat. So no matter what happens, we’re going to be in great shape,” Al ensured, noting that the show, which has been on the air since 1952, is “built to evolve.”

He continued: “Each one of us is very fortunate to be in this position, for however long we have, and then we pass the baton off to somebody else. So the future of the show is just as strong and bright no matter who steps in.”
