From A One-Bedroom Cabin To Country Royalty — Dolly Parton’s Childhood Story Is Almost Too Incredible To Believe. Talk about starting from the bottom… Long before Dolly Parton became a rhinestone-covered global icon, she was one of 12 children growing up together in a tiny one-bedroom cabin in Tennessee

Long before Dolly Parton became a country music icon, she grew up in a world far removed from the glamour, fame and fortune that would later define her career.

Born on January 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tennessee, Parton was the fourth of 12 children born to Avie Lee Caroline and Robert Lee Parton Sr. The family lived in a modest one-room cabin near the Great Smoky Mountains, where space and money were both in short supply.

Her childhood was humble, but it would become a lasting source of inspiration for the woman she eventually became.

Parton grew up alongside 11 siblings: Willadeene, David, Coy, Robert Jr., Stella, Cassie, Randy, Larry, Floyd, Freida and Rachel.

The family later lived in a one-bedroom cabin on their small farm in Locust Ridge, where Parton spent much of her childhood. The area was north of the Greenbrier Valley of the Great Smoky Mountains and had a strong Pentecostal community.

Parton later described her family as extremely poor, but those difficult circumstances did not prevent music from becoming a central part of their lives.

Her father, Robert Lee Parton Sr., worked in the mountains of East Tennessee. He initially worked as a sharecropper before tending a small tobacco farm and other acreage. He also took construction jobs to supplement the family’s income.

Her mother, Avie Lee, devoted herself to raising their large family. Music was an important influence in the household, and Parton later credited her mother’s family with helping shape her musical abilities.

Music became part of Dolly’s childhood

Religion and music were closely connected during Parton’s early years.

She was raised in the Church of God in Cleveland, Tennessee, where her grandfather, Jake Robert Owens, served as a pastor. Her earliest performances took place in church, beginning when she was just six years old.

At seven, she began playing a homemade guitar. A year later, her uncle gave her her first real guitar.

Those early experiences helped establish the foundation for a musical career that would eventually take her far beyond the Tennessee mountains.

The landscape and family life of her childhood would also remain important themes throughout her songwriting. Her experiences growing up with limited resources later influenced songs such as Coat of Many Colors and In the Good Old Days (When Times Were Bad).

The cabin that remained part of her story

The Locust Ridge property became particularly meaningful to Parton. Years after the family had sold the farm, she bought it back in the late 1980s.

Her brother Bobby helped with restoration and new construction on the property.

Parton also recreated the family’s childhood cabin at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The replica contains original family items and serves as a reminder of the modest beginnings that shaped so much of her life and music.

For Parton, that past never disappeared beneath the success. The mountains, her family and the hardships of her childhood continued to influence her identity and creative work.

Parton eventually left her hometown after graduating from Sevier County High School in 1964.

The next day, she moved to Nashville to pursue her ambitions in music.

Her beginnings could hardly have been more different from the world she would later enter. She came from a large family that had lived with very little, yet those experiences provided the stories, sounds and memories that would become an enduring part of her artistic legacy.

The girl who grew up in a modest Tennessee cabin would go on to build a career known around the world — but the mountains of East Tennessee and the family that raised her remained at the heart of her story.
