George Harrison Had One Big Problem With Other Artists Covering His Songs — And His Reason Was Brutally Honest

George Harrison may have been one of the most respected songwriters in rock history, but when it came to other musicians covering his songs, the former Beatle was not always ready to break out the champagne.

In fact, Harrison had a surprisingly complicated attitude towards cover versions of his work — and his reasoning revealed plenty about the quiet, famously private musician behind some of The Beatles’ most enduring songs.

During his years with The Beatles, Harrison developed from a young guitarist into a formidable songwriter. Tracks including While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Something and Here Comes the Sun eventually became classics, earning Harrison a place among the most influential songwriters of his generation.

But there was another side to having such a celebrated catalogue.

Once a song leaves the studio, artists can reinterpret it however they like. Some covers become beloved in their own right, while others leave fans wondering why anyone bothered touching the original.

Harrison understood that tension.

His attitude was particularly interesting because he was hardly hostile to music itself. He collaborated with countless musicians throughout his career and was deeply interested in different sounds, performers and creative approaches.

The problem was more personal.

A song written by Harrison was not simply a collection of chords and lyrics. His compositions often carried particular emotions, experiences and ideas that were closely connected to his own life.

When another artist performed one of those songs, that personal connection could inevitably change.

And Harrison was not the sort of musician who automatically assumed that a famous song would become better simply because someone else had recorded it.

That makes his reaction all the more fascinating today.

Modern music is packed with cover versions. Some become enormous hits, occasionally even eclipsing the original in the public imagination. Yet Harrison’s perspective serves as a reminder that songwriting is about far more than melody.

There is also the question of interpretation.

A singer can completely transform a composition, stripping it down, slowing it down or turning a gentle song into something dramatically different.

That is perhaps why his views on covers remain so interesting decades after his death.

There is also a delicious irony here.

Harrison belonged to arguably the most covered band in music history. The Beatles’ songs have been re-recorded by generations of artists, from major rock stars to unexpected performers who discovered completely new audiences through the group’s catalogue.

Yet Harrison himself could be much more skeptical about the practice.

And perhaps that is exactly what makes the story so revealing.

Behind the mystical image, quiet humour and legendary status was a songwriter with very definite opinions about his craft.

George Harrison gave the world some of rock’s greatest songs — but when other musicians tried to put their own spin on them, the legendary Beatle was not necessarily reaching for the applause.
