Princess Eugenie’s daughter Adelaide: the meaning behind her distinctive royal name

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank have chosen a deeply personal name for their newborn daughter, linking her to people and places that hold special significance for their family.
The couple announced that their third child is named Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank, two weeks after she was born on 3 August 2026 in Lisbon, Portugal. The baby arrived at 6.20pm and weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces.
Eugenie and Jack shared the news with photographs of their daughter alongside her two older brothers, August and Ernest, and explained that the names were chosen to honour three people they love and admire.
Why Adelaide?

The first name immediately stands out for its royal associations.
Adelaide was the name of Queen Adelaide, the wife of King William IV, who reigned in the 19th century. The name also has a connection to Portugal through Maria Adelaide of Portugal, giving it relevance to both sides of the family’s heritage.
There was even a subtle reference to Queen Adelaide at Eugenie’s 2018 wedding. For the occasion, the Princess wore diamond brooches that had once belonged to Queen Adelaide, adding another intriguing link between Eugenie’s own royal history and her daughter’s name.
A tribute to Queen Elizabeth II
The middle name Elizabeth carries an especially poignant family connection.
It honours Eugenie’s late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died in 2022. Adelaide is therefore the latest member of the wider royal family to carry Elizabeth as part of her name.
For Eugenie, the choice reflects the importance of her grandmother within the family and preserves that connection in the next generation.
The story behind Annina

The third name, Annina, is perhaps the most distinctive.
Unlike Adelaide and Elizabeth, its meaning is tied to a more personal connection. Eugenie and Jack described their daughter’s name as being inspired by three people they love and admire, with Annina understood to represent someone particularly meaningful to the couple.
Together, the three names create a blend of royal tradition, personal affection and the family’s links to both Britain and Portugal.
A new addition to the Brooksbank family

Adelaide joins her brothers, August Philip Hawke, 5, and Ernest George Ronnie, 3. The couple married in 2018 and have continued to divide their lives between Britain and Portugal.
Her arrival was officially announced by the Royal Family on 4 August, the day after her birth in Lisbon. The King, Queen and other members of the Royal Family were said to be delighted by the news.
With Adelaide’s name now revealed, the latest addition to Eugenie and Jack’s family carries a combination of royal history and personal memories — a fitting continuation of the thoughtful naming tradition already seen with August and Ernest.
