Well, well, well… looks like this one is having a moment. Henry Cavill has another film climbing the charts, but this time it is a thriller many viewers may have completely overlooked — until now. The incredible film has quietly found a fresh audience, pulling viewers into a tense story packed with danger, shifting loyalties and enough twists to make putting the remote down nearly impossible. And here’s the kicker: a movie that once flew under the radar is suddenly back in the spotlight, proving that streaming can give forgotten gems a serious second life

Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey Finds a Second Life on Streaming After Disappointing Box Office Run

Guy Ritchie’s star-packed action thriller In the Grey may not have delivered the theatrical performance its high-profile cast and sizeable budget suggested it could. On streaming, however, the film is beginning to tell a very different story.

Starring Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González, the slick heist thriller has climbed into major streaming charts after grossing just over $23 million at the box office against a reported estimated budget of $70 million.

According to FlixPatrol, In the Grey reached No. 5 on Prime Video’s global Top 10 and No. 9 on Apple TV’s US Top 10, giving the movie fresh momentum following its disappointing cinema run.

The film opened in US theaters on May 15 before arriving on streaming services in various territories in June. It is scheduled to become available on Prime Video from September 9.

What is In the Grey about?

Ritchie returns to the world of elaborate criminal schemes and dangerous operatives with a story centered on an elite covert team accustomed to operating far beyond the public eye.

The group moves through a world where influence and strategy can be every bit as valuable as weapons. Their latest assignment begins when a ruthless despot takes control of a fortune worth $1 billion.

Their mission sounds straightforward: steal the money back.

But the operation is described as the kind of assignment that would amount to a “suicide mission” for almost anyone else.

What initially appears to be an extraordinarily difficult heist soon becomes something far more dangerous, developing into a battle involving strategy, deception and survival.

For viewers familiar with Ritchie’s earlier films such as Snatch and The Gentlemen, the combination is recognizable: fast-moving action, sharp exchanges between characters and an increasingly complicated criminal plot.

Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal lead an impressive ensemble

The movie brings together several major names.

Henry Cavill, widely known for Man of Steel and The Witcher, stars alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González.

The supporting cast includes Kristofer Hivju, Emmett J. Scanlan, Jason Wong and Rosamund Pike.

It also represents another collaboration between Ritchie and performers who have previously worked within the director’s distinctive brand of action filmmaking.

Despite that combination of established stars and an acclaimed filmmaker behind the camera, In the Grey struggled to turn its pedigree into significant theatrical business.

A $70 million movie that earned just over $23 million

The numbers from the film’s cinema release were difficult to ignore.

In the Grey reportedly carried an estimated production budget of around $70 million but grossed only slightly more than $23 million at the box office.

That made its theatrical performance a considerable disappointment.

Streaming, though, has opened another chapter for the movie.

FlixPatrol data showed the thriller climbing as high as fifth place on Prime Video’s worldwide Top 10 ranking. In the United States, it also entered Apple TV’s Top 10, reaching ninth place.

The turnaround provides an example of how a movie that struggles to attract audiences during its theatrical window can find a substantially different reception once viewers are able to watch it at home.

Audiences have responded more warmly

Its streaming popularity is accompanied by a strong audience response on Rotten Tomatoes.

Viewers have given In the Grey an 83% audience score, with reactions cited by HELLO! describing the film as “brilliant” and “absolutely incredible.”

Critical reaction has also included notable praise.

The Guardian awarded the thriller four stars, finding “a great deal of fun” in Ritchie’s approach while also highlighting a more serious side to the movie.

The New York Times, meanwhile, characterized it as a “sleek, sun-drenched actioner.”

Those responses offer an interesting contrast with the movie’s underwhelming theatrical numbers.

In the Grey gets another opportunity on Prime Video

For Ritchie fans who skipped the movie during its cinema release, its streaming run offers another chance to see the filmmaker return to familiar territory.

A billion-dollar target, an elite covert team and a mission that rapidly spirals beyond its original plan provide the framework, while Cavill, Gyllenhaal and González headline an unusually recognizable ensemble.

Its box-office chapter may have been disappointing, but In the Grey is already demonstrating that theatrical receipts do not necessarily determine how a movie will perform once it reaches streaming audiences.

With the film having climbed into the global Prime Video Top 10 and earned an 83% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, its arrival on Prime Video on September 9 could give Guy Ritchie’s action thriller an even larger second life.
