What Is Blood Sacrifice? Netflix’s Swedish Crime Thriller Surges to No. 1 Globally

A killer is hunting police officers in Stockholm, and the detective trying to stop him has to turn to the one person he would rather leave out of the investigation: his estranged father.

That is the central setup of Blood Sacrifice (Blodsoffer in Swedish), a five-part Swedish crime thriller that quickly became Netflix’s latest international success. Released on August 20, 2026, the series recorded seven million views during its first four days and went straight to No. 1 on Netflix’s global chart for non-English television.

Created by British screenwriter George Kay, the series combines a police murder investigation with a strained father-son relationship. Jakob Oftebro plays detective Thomas Berg, while Peter Andersson portrays his father, Alfred, a retired detective whose expertise becomes crucial as the case grows more dangerous.

What is Blood Sacrifice about?

The story begins during the Swedish summer in Stockholm.

Police receive an emergency call about a home invasion at a summer house in the Stockholm archipelago. Two officers are dispatched to investigate, but when they arrive, there appears to be nobody at the property.

The situation takes a much darker turn the following day when both officers are found dead.

Their deaths are only the beginning. A series of brutal attacks follows, with police officers seemingly being singled out as targets. The investigation falls to detective Thomas Berg, who soon realizes that solving the case may require help from someone he has spent years trying to keep at a distance.

That person is his father, Alfred, a former detective played by Peter Andersson.

Thomas and Alfred are forced into an uneasy partnership as the number of victims increases and the threat begins moving closer to Thomas’s own life. To catch the killer, they have to put aside years of resentment and confront the difficult history between them.

Netflix describes the series as a thriller centered on a detective reluctantly working with his estranged ex-cop father after two police officers are brutally murdered. The story was filmed in Stockholm and the Stockholm archipelago, giving the investigation a distinctly Swedish setting.

Blood Sacrifice' 'Lupin' Creator's Netflix Drama Is Sharp

Nordic noir meets a troubled family relationship

Blood Sacrifice draws heavily on the familiar ingredients of Nordic noir: violent crimes, troubled investigators, an increasingly complicated mystery and a bleak atmosphere.

But creator George Kay has said the relationship between Thomas and Alfred is at the center of the story.

For Kay, the crime investigation provides the framework for a story about an estranged father and son being brought together again through their work. He also highlighted Stockholm’s distinctive Nordic summer light as an important part of the show’s atmosphere.

That combination gives the series two intertwined mysteries. One concerns the identity and motives of the person targeting police officers. The other involves Thomas and Alfred themselves, and whether working together can overcome the damage between them.

Kay is no stranger to international crime dramas. He created Lupin, the French-language Netflix series starring Omar Sy, and also created Hijack, the Apple TV thriller starring Idris Elba.

Blood Sacrifice is directed by Kristoffer Nyholm, whose previous credits include the Danish crime drama The Killing and the British series Taboo.

The series was produced by B-Reel Films and Observatory Pictures in association with New Pictures. Aron Levander and Emilie Robson are credited as episode writers, with Levander also responsible for the Swedish adaptation.

Who stars in Blood Sacrifice?

Jakob Oftebro leads the cast as Thomas Berg, the detective at the center of the investigation.

The Norwegian actor is known for Scandinavian productions including Hamilton and Stenbeck. In comments released by Netflix, Oftebro described Thomas as a character whose commitment to police work forces him to confront both a brutal killer and his complicated relationship with his father.

Peter Andersson plays Alfred Berg, Thomas’s estranged father and a former detective. Andersson has appeared in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and said the combination of crime thriller and family drama was one of the elements that attracted him to the project.

The detective role also had a personal connection for Andersson, who noted that his own son is a police officer.

The wider cast includes Alexander Abdallah, Electra Hallman, Henrik Norlén, Lisette T. Pagler, Magnus Krepper, Irina Björklund, Anders Mossling and Anna Maria Käll.

Why is Blood Sacrifice trending on Netflix?

The series made an immediate impact after its debut.

Between August 20 and August 23, Blood Sacrifice accumulated seven million views, putting it at No. 1 on Netflix’s global non-English television chart.

Its early performance places the Swedish thriller among the growing number of non-English Netflix productions that have attracted audiences outside their countries of origin.

The show’s international appeal is also helped by its creative pedigree. George Kay has already worked on globally successful European-language crime television through Lupin, while Blood Sacrifice combines that experience with a Swedish cast, Swedish setting and the conventions of Nordic noir.

Netflix officially describes the series as a thriller, while the story also incorporates elements of crime drama and family drama.

Will there be a Blood Sacrifice season 2?

For now, there is no official confirmation from Netflix of a second season.

The first season only premiered on August 20, 2026, so the show’s early performance provides an indication of its initial reception, but it does not amount to an announcement of another season.

For the moment, viewers have five episodes following Thomas Berg and Alfred as they investigate the increasingly dangerous attacks on police officers.
