Joy Behar Confronts Sunny Hostin In Heated ‘The View’ Clash Over AI Movie Deal — As One Question Exposes A Major Divide Between The Co-Hosts

Joy Behar

A tense debate erupted on The View after Joy Behar challenged co-host Sunny Hostin over her decision to partner with an artificial intelligence company to bring her bestselling books to the screen.

What began as a conversation about new opportunities for underrepresented storytellers quickly developed into a pointed disagreement about the future of Hollywood and the people whose livelihoods depend on it.

Behar, 83, questioned whether Hostin’s new business arrangement could actually harm the communities she hopes to support.

And when Hostin explained that AI could help her overcome years of rejection from traditional studios, Behar responded with a question that brought the central controversy into sharp focus.

If artificial intelligence replaces human actors, writers and filmmakers, who really benefits from the movies being made?

Sunny Hostin Reveals Her Unexpected Hollywood Deal

Sunny Hostin

During Friday’s episode of the ABC daytime talk show, Hostin, 57, revealed that she had partnered with an AI startup called Fountain 0.

The lawyer, television personality and bestselling author explained that she had licensed her name and likeness to the company as part of an effort to adapt her fiction into screen productions.

For Hostin, the arrangement represented an alternative to a Hollywood system she believes has repeatedly overlooked her work.

She told her fellow panellists that she had spent six years trying to turn her bestselling trilogy into films or a television series.

Despite her success as an author, those efforts had not produced the adaptations she wanted.

“The gatekeeping in Hollywood around Black and brown creative content is insane,” Hostin argued.

“I cannot get New York Times bestselling books onto the screen to tell diverse stories to diverse communities.”

She believes emerging technology could provide a way around those traditional obstacles.

But her explanation did not satisfy Behar.

Joy Behar Interrupts With A Blunt Question

Joy Behar

As Hostin described her difficulties securing a screen adaptation, Behar interrupted.

“So what’s that got to do with AI?” she asked.

Hostin responded that artificial intelligence could help independent creators develop projects without relying entirely on established Hollywood decision-makers.

“You get to make your film. You get to have a director,” she explained.

However, the discussion took another turn when Alyssa Farah Griffin asked whether the proposed productions would feature real actors.

Hostin confirmed that the performers could be AI-generated.

She also revealed that she might appear in a production through a digital version of herself, having licensed her likeness to the company.

The admission prompted another pointed response from Behar.

“So you’re a robot now?” she asked.

Hostin clarified that the technology would allow her to present a completed product to streaming platforms and seek distribution.

For the author, the central objective was getting stories onto screens that she believed traditional studios had been unwilling to produce.

But Behar remained concerned about the implications for human performers.

‘How Does That Help The Real Black Community?’

Sunny Hostin

The disagreement intensified when Behar questioned whether films created with digital performers could genuinely benefit Black actors and other entertainment workers.

“If those people are in fact robots, how does that help the real Black community?” she asked.

“Because the real people are not working.”

The question highlighted the competing priorities at the heart of the debate.

Hostin was focused on increasing the visibility of stories featuring underrepresented communities.

Behar was concerned that the method being used to tell those stories could reduce employment opportunities for the very people Hostin wanted to support.

Hostin pushed back, arguing that many of those opportunities did not currently exist because studios were declining to make the projects.

“Because the stories are being told, Joy, because the real people are not getting jobs in Hollywood,” she replied.

She also acknowledged that AI was becoming an increasingly significant part of the entertainment industry.

“The train has left the station, and this is something that’s here and it’s not going away,” Hostin said.

The exchange made clear that the two co-hosts were approaching the issue from very different perspectives.

Ana Navarro Raises The Ethical Question

As the discussion continued, Ana Navarro asked Hostin whether she had considered the ethical concerns surrounding her partnership.

Hostin acknowledged that she had.

“I thought about that a lot,” she admitted.

Before she could fully expand on her answer, Behar suggested that Hostin’s desire to get her work adapted was influencing the decision.

“But she needs the project,” Behar interjected.

Hostin immediately challenged that characterisation.

“Well, I don’t need the project. I think diverse stories need to be told,” she replied.

Behar continued pressing the issue, arguing that human writers, directors and actors could lose opportunities as AI-generated productions became more common.

“I get that. We’ve said that already,” she responded.

“But I’m saying those same people you’re now worried about are now out of work, the writers, the directors, the actors…”

Hostin maintained that she was not personally responsible for the lack of opportunities available in Hollywood.

“But I’m not the person putting them out of work because the studios just won’t make these projects,” she argued.

Neither woman appeared persuaded by the other’s reasoning.

The AI Film That Inspired Sunny’s Partnership

Hostin also discussed Fountain 0’s involvement in Dream of Violets, an AI-produced film directed by Ash Koosha.

The 75-minute docudrama, inspired by protests in Tehran, Iran, was created using AI-generated elements rather than conventional actors, sets and cameras.

According to the account discussed on the programme, the film was made on a budget of approximately $2,000 and was presented at the Tribeca Film Festival.

For Hostin, the project illustrated how technology might dramatically reduce the cost of bringing stories to the screen.

A production that would ordinarily require substantial funding and a large crew could potentially be developed with far fewer resources.

That possibility is particularly appealing to creators who struggle to secure backing from traditional studios.

However, it also raises difficult questions about what happens to the people who would normally be employed on such productions.

Actors, production designers, camera operators and other film professionals depend on the work that AI-generated productions may reduce or eliminate.

Those concerns were central to Behar’s objections.

Viewers React As The Debate Spills Onto Social Media

After The View shared a clip of the exchange on Instagram, viewers began offering their own opinions.

Several commenters sided with Behar, arguing that greater representation on screen should not come at the expense of human employment.

“Wrong AI is not helping the people. Joy is correct,” one viewer wrote.

Another expressed disappointment with Hostin’s reasoning.

The commenter questioned why someone concerned about opportunities for Black and brown performers would support technology capable of replacing those same workers.

Others suggested that wealthy entertainers and public figures should invest in independent productions rather than relying on AI-generated films.

One viewer said they had personally financed three films on modest budgets and believed supporting human filmmakers was a better solution.

Another made their position clear:

“Sunny, I love you down, but I’m NOT supporting an ai film. I can just read your books without a film adaptation.”

The responses reflected broader concerns about how generative AI could reshape creative industries.

While some see the technology as a way to make filmmaking more accessible, others worry about its impact on jobs, artistic authenticity and the value of human performance.

Sunny Hostin’s Books Have Already Found A Large Audience

The View" host Joy Behar on her play, "My First Ex-Husband"

Hostin is an Emmy Award-winning journalist and the author of both a memoir and a bestselling fiction trilogy.

Her writing frequently explores themes of family, identity, social justice and the history of exclusive Black resort communities.

Her fiction has attracted readers interested in stories centred on Black families and communities whose experiences have not always received extensive attention in mainstream entertainment.

Hostin believes those stories deserve opportunities beyond the printed page.

Her frustration with Hollywood’s traditional development process appears to have played a significant role in her decision to explore AI-assisted production.

But her co-hosts’ questions demonstrated that securing an adaptation is only one part of a much larger conversation.

The way a film is produced, and the people involved in making it, can be just as important to audiences as the story being told.

A Debate That Goes Far Beyond The View

the View' Co-Host Joy Behar Dismisses Gen Z's Economic Struggles - Business Insider

The disagreement between Behar and Hostin reflects a growing tension across the entertainment industry.

Artificial intelligence offers creators the possibility of developing ambitious projects without the budgets or resources historically required for film and television production.

For writers who have struggled to attract studio interest, that could open new opportunities.

At the same time, the use of AI-generated performers and production elements raises concerns about employment, consent, creative ownership and the future of human storytelling.

Hostin’s argument is that technology could help bring overlooked stories to audiences.

Behar’s concern is that those stories might be produced without providing work for the communities they are intended to represent.

Both issues were at the centre of the unusually candid exchange.

One Question Left The Co-Hosts Divided

By the end of the discussion, Hostin had made clear that she viewed her Fountain 0 partnership as a way to challenge Hollywood’s traditional barriers.

Behar, meanwhile, remained focused on the potential consequences for real actors, writers and directors.

Their disagreement did not produce an easy resolution.

Instead, it exposed a fundamental question facing the entertainment industry as AI technology becomes more sophisticated.

Can a film truly create new opportunities for underrepresented communities if the people who would normally bring those stories to life are replaced by artificial intelligence?

For Hostin, getting the stories told is an essential first step.

For Behar, the people who tell them matter just as much.

And judging by the reaction from viewers, that argument is unlikely to end with a single episode of The View.
