Revisiting Her Unforgettable 1990 Performance Now Carries An Emotion Nobody Could Have Imagined Then. Every Soaring Note Feels More Precious, And The Final Moments Are Almost Impossible To Watch Without Feeling The Weight Of Her Absence.

Dolly Parton’s Powerful 1990 Performance of ‘He’s Alive’ Showed the Faith She Never Hid

Dolly

Dolly Parton spent much of her life speaking openly about the faith that shaped her from childhood, and one unforgettable performance from 1990 remains a striking example of how deeply those beliefs were woven into her music.

Following the country legend’s death on Aug. 25, fans have been revisiting a moving appearance at the Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, where Parton performed “He’s Alive,” the gospel song centered on the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The performance was not simply another moment in a career filled with memorable stages. It reflected something Parton discussed openly throughout her life: her belief in God and her refusal to hide the role Christianity played in who she was.

Dolly Parton’s faith began in childhood

Parton was raised in the Church of God and grew up in a deeply musical Christian household.

Her grandfather served as a preacher and was also an accomplished fiddle player. Dolly and her 11 siblings frequently traveled to local churches to sing, giving music and faith an important place in her life from an early age.

Parton was baptized when she was 12.

Those childhood experiences remained part of her identity long after she became one of country music’s biggest stars.

Rather than distancing herself from her religious background as her fame grew, Parton repeatedly spoke about the strength she drew from her relationship with God.

‘I’m just telling you what makes me work’

Only a year before her death, Parton discussed her faith during a conversation with Khloé Kardashian.

She acknowledged that some people had suggested she should speak less publicly about religion, but she made clear that she had no intention of pretending her beliefs were unimportant to her.

“Even if I knew there was no God, I’d choose to believe it, because I wanna believe there’s something out there, and I do believe it, so it doesn’t matter,” Parton said.

She added that speaking about her own faith was not the same as telling other people what they should believe.

“People say, ‘You shouldn’t talk about that.’ I said, ‘Well, yes I should.’ I’m not telling you what to do. I’m just telling you what makes me work, what I believe.”

That distinction became characteristic of the way Parton discussed Christianity throughout her career. Her faith was personal, but she never treated it as something she needed to conceal.

Her nephew said Dolly was ‘in the arms of Jesus’

When Parton died on Aug. 25, her nephew Bryan Seaver announced the news on behalf of the family.

In his emotional message, Seaver spoke directly about the faith his aunt had carried throughout her life.

He said Dolly was now “in the arms of Jesus” and believed she had been reunited with her late husband, Carl Dean, her parents and others she had lost.

For those familiar with Parton’s own words about God, the message reflected beliefs she had expressed publicly for decades.

Gospel music remained part of Dolly’s career

Parton’s Christian roots frequently found their way into her recordings and collaborations.

Over the years, she worked with Christian artists including for KING & COUNTRY, joining the duo for a version of their song “God Only Knows.”

Her catalog also contained numerous songs shaped by gospel traditions, spirituality and the church music she heard growing up in East Tennessee.

But few performances brought that side of Parton’s identity into focus as powerfully as her appearance at the Dove Awards in 1990.

The story behind ‘He’s Alive’

“He’s Alive” was written by Christian singer-songwriter Don Francisco.

The song retells the resurrection of Jesus from the perspective of the apostle Peter.

Rather than beginning with triumph, the narrative starts in grief.

Peter is overwhelmed by the events surrounding Christ’s crucifixion, carrying sorrow, fear and despair before learning that Jesus has risen.

The song gradually shifts from mourning toward hope until its central declaration arrives: He is alive.

That emotional progression made the song particularly suited to Parton’s storytelling instincts.

She recorded her own version for her 1989 album White Limozeen, bringing the gospel composition to a wider country audience.

Dolly brought ‘He’s Alive’ to the Dove Awards stage

The following year, Parton performed the song at the Gospel Music Association Dove Awards.

It became one of the event’s most memorable performances.

Parton approached the song not simply as a vocal showcase but as a dramatic piece of storytelling, allowing its message to build gradually from sorrow into celebration.

By the climax, the performance had transformed into an unmistakable declaration of faith.

For an entertainer often associated with rhinestones, humor and larger-than-life glamour, the moment revealed another part of the woman audiences had known for decades.

Underneath everything else was the girl raised singing in churches with her family.

A performance that carries new meaning after her death

Parton’s passing has inevitably given performances such as “He’s Alive” a different emotional weight.

Her career produced countless defining moments, from “Jolene” and “9 to 5” to “I Will Always Love You,” but the Dove Awards performance represented something less concerned with commercial success.

It was Dolly singing about something she genuinely believed.

Her Christian faith remained present through enormous fame, professional triumphs, personal losses and the final years of her life.

She never insisted that everyone share those beliefs.

She simply refused to pretend they were anything less than central to her own life.

And more than three decades after she stood on the Dove Awards stage singing “He’s Alive,” the performance remains one of the clearest examples of that conviction — a deeply personal expression of the faith Dolly Parton carried with her until the end.
