BBC’s New Six-Part Romance Is Being Tipped as the Ultimate Autumn Binge — With Aimee Lou Wood, Suranne Jones and Adolescence Star Owen Cooper

Rom-com fans looking for their next cosy obsession may have found it, as the BBC prepares to launch an emotional new drama about movies, friendship and the terrifying moment two best friends realise they might want something more.
Film Club stars The White Lotus and Sex Education favourite Aimee Lou Wood alongside Nabhaan Rizwan, with Suranne Jones and Adolescence breakout Owen Cooper among its impressive supporting cast.
And judging by the first look, this isn’t simply another straightforward love story.
At its heart is a woman who hasn’t left her house for six months, a Friday-night ritual that has become her escape from reality, and one piece of news that threatens to change everything.
Friday Nights Mean Everything to Evie

Wood plays Evie, a devoted film fanatic whose favourite night of the week is Friday.
That’s when she transforms her mother’s garage to match whichever movie she and her friends are watching and settles in for a few precious hours away from everyday life.
Her closest companion is Noa, played by Rizwan.

Their weekly film club has become a comforting constant — particularly for Evie, who, according to the official synopsis, hasn’t left home for six months following what is described only as a “wobble.”
But this particular Friday is different.
Noa has landed a dream job.
The problem is that it’s taking him to the other side of the country.
Suddenly, the possibility of losing their weekly ritual forces Evie and Noa to confront something they’ve been able to leave comfortably unspoken: their friendship may have become something more.
Aimee Lou Wood Isn’t Only the Star

Wood also helped create the world viewers will see on screen.
She co-wrote Film Club with Ralph Davis, whose credits include House of the Dragon, Big Boys and Othello.
The series has been described as a witty and emotional exploration of love and family, the struggle between following your head and your heart, and the complications of falling for someone who is already your best friend.
Evie’s romantic dilemma unfolds against the eccentricity of her family home.
Suranne Jones plays Suz, Evie’s fiercely loving single mother, while Liv Hill portrays her sister Izzie.
Adam Long appears as Josh, Suz’s boyfriend and the self-appointed man of the house.
And one particularly familiar young face lives nearby.
Owen Cooper Joins the Cast After Adolescence

Owen Cooper, who broke through with Adolescence, plays Evie’s frustrating neighbour Callum.
The ensemble also includes Arian Nik and Fola Evans-Akingbola as film club regulars Kam and Samantha.
Co-creator Ralph Davis steps in front of the camera as Dominic, the group’s newest addition, while Rivals and Sex Education actress Lisa McGrillis plays Suz’s friend and neighbour Steph.
Together, they surround Evie as the safe little world she has built inside her mother’s garage begins to change.
Friendship or Something More?

That emotional dilemma appears to be the real hook behind Film Club.
Evie has found a way to retreat from a difficult reality through cinema. Noa has been there beside her every Friday.
Now his opportunity to leave forces both of them to consider what their relationship actually means before distance makes the decision for them.
For viewers who enjoy friends-to-lovers romances with plenty of family drama surrounding them, the ingredients are certainly there.
And the combination of Wood, Rizwan, Jones and Cooper gives the series an unusually strong cast.
Film Club is set to premiere on Tuesday, October 7, with all episodes available on BBC iPlayer from 6am. The opening two episodes will also air on BBC Three at 10pm that evening.
A weekly movie night was supposed to be Evie’s escape from the outside world. Now the person who made those Friday nights special is preparing to leave — and the feelings they’ve avoided could become impossible to ignore.
