William and Kate Put on Alert Over Harry and Meghan’s ‘Deliberate Timing’. The Sussexes Are Branded the ‘Worst Culprits’ as Fresh Questions Erupt Over When Their Biggest Moves and Announcements Appear. And the Latest Warning Suggests the Waleses May Have Every Reason to Be Watching Closely.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to Britain has sparked a new warning over an issue that could prove increasingly difficult for the Royal Family: who gets the spotlight, and when.

Royal author Phil Dampier has claimed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could create headaches for Prince William and Princess Catherine if their future appearances and charitable activities collide with important engagements involving the working royals.

His concern comes as Harry and Meghan settle back into life in the UK with Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five — a return that Dampier claims caught the wider Royal Family by surprise.

“They didn’t take timing into consideration when they suddenly moved back without telling anyone, so when it comes to timing, they’re the worst culprits,” he said.

“No one was expecting them to come back, so no one had time to figure out what to do about it.”

Warning over William and Catherine

The Sussexes are no longer working royals, but their enormous public profile means almost anything they do can generate international coverage.

Dampier believes that could become particularly sensitive when William and Catherine are carrying out their own duties.

“When Harry and Meghan are out and about, who’s to say they won’t time things deliberately to overshadow other members of the Royal Family, particularly William and Catherine?” he said.

There is no evidence presented that Harry and Meghan have deliberately planned engagements to upstage the Prince and Princess of Wales, and Dampier’s comments are his own assessment of what could happen.

But he argued that the Sussexes’ combination of royal titles, public appearances and charity work risks creating confusion around their status.

“I think they’re trying it on,” he said.

“The fear is that once they start doing charity jobs and turning up for various functions, they will look like royals, talk like royals, and call themselves the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but of course, they aren’t working royals.”

Why timing has suddenly become such a sensitive issue

The debate has become particularly noticeable during an important week for the Royal Family.

Prince George has begun his first day at Eton College, following in the footsteps of his father Prince William.

The week also marks the anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

At the same time, attention has been drawn back towards Harry and Meghan following clarification of their position as non-working members of the Royal Family.

For Dampier, the resulting headlines illustrate precisely the problem he believes the Palace could face more frequently now that the Sussexes are living in Britain again.

“This is one of the problems,” he said.

“When we start to get a controversy over Harry and Meghan, it tends to make the front pages.”

He pointed specifically to George’s Eton milestone and the anniversary of the late Queen’s death, arguing that coverage surrounding the Sussexes risked overshadowing both.

“I think this is what the Royal Family is worried about,” he added.

Sussexes remain outside the working monarchy

Harry and Meghan stepped back from their positions as senior working royals in 2020.

Their return to Britain does not change that arrangement.

They remain the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but their activities are conducted independently rather than on behalf of the King.

That distinction has become increasingly important since the family’s unexpected return, particularly as speculation grows over the kind of public life Harry and Meghan intend to establish in Britain.

If they attend charity events, launch initiatives or make high-profile appearances, those engagements could inevitably attract many of the same photographers and headlines as official royal events.

Dampier suggested that this creates an awkward middle ground.

Harry and Meghan can remain highly visible public figures with royal titles while simultaneously having no formal role within the working monarchy.

Harry makes first appearance since returning

Harry has already been seen publicly since moving back to Britain.

The Duke was spotted entering a podcast studio in central London, marking his first reported appearance since returning with his family.

Meghan, meanwhile, has maintained a much lower profile.

The couple are believed to be settling their children into their new routine, with reports suggesting Archie and Lilibet have been registered at a local private school.

The Sussexes have also been linked with a possible home in the Cotswolds, although details surrounding their longer-term living arrangements remain unclear.

The real test may come once Harry and Meghan begin establishing a regular schedule of their own.

When they lived thousands of miles away in California, clashes between Sussex appearances and official royal engagements could still generate headlines.

Living in Britain potentially puts both branches of the family within the same media cycle far more frequently.

A charity appearance by Harry could take place on the same day as an engagement by William.

A project involving Meghan could coincide with an appearance by Catherine.

Even without deliberate planning, competing events could leave newspapers and broadcasters deciding which royal story receives the greatest prominence.

Dampier fears the consequences could deepen existing tensions.

He accused the Sussexes of needing to “rein it back and be more humble and cooperative,” while arguing that their return requires greater consideration of the wider royal diary.

William and Harry remain at the centre of the issue

Any potential competition for attention carries added significance because of the long-running tensions between the brothers.

Harry and William once worked side by side as senior members of the monarchy, but their lives have followed dramatically different paths since the Sussexes stepped down.

William is now Prince of Wales and heir to the throne, with Catherine alongside him as one of the monarchy’s most prominent working royals.

Harry, meanwhile, remains the King’s son but operates independently.

The Sussexes’ return has now brought those two worlds geographically closer again.

Whether that leads to greater cooperation or simply creates more opportunities for competing headlines remains to be seen.

For now, Dampier’s warning is based on what he believes could happen rather than evidence of a deliberate Sussex strategy.

But with Harry and Meghan back in Britain, their children starting a new chapter and questions continuing over the couple’s future public activities, the battle for royal attention may prove one of the most delicate issues the family has to navigate.
