Saturday Night Live UK Mocks Shane Gillis After His Controversial Comments About Women’s Gym Clothing Spark Backlash
Saturday Night Live UK has joined the growing criticism of comedian Shane Gillis, delivering a pointed joke about his controversial remarks concerning women’s gym attire.
During the October 17 episode, Weekend Update anchor Ania Magliano targeted the American comedian following his appearance on the original Saturday Night Live a week earlier.
Gillis, 38, had already faced criticism from several entertainers over comments made during his October 10 opening monologue.
Magliano’s response brought the controversy across the Atlantic, turning his remarks into the punchline of a segment on the British version of the comedy show.

Magliano, 28, introduced the joke while discussing an Oktoberfest ride operator in Munich who had reportedly offered free cycling shorts to female passengers.
The shorts were intended to protect women from having photographs taken underneath their clothing without consent.
Magliano then suggested that wearing gym-style shorts could expose women to a different problem.
At that moment, a photograph of Gillis appeared on the screen, prompting laughter from the studio audience.
She followed the joke with another reference to his recent SNL appearance, mentioning an incident in which he accidentally used profanity during a Dr. Seuss-inspired sketch.
Magliano then delivered an intentionally profanity-filled insult directed at Gillis, drawing another reaction from the audience.
The segment referenced both his on-air language slip and the wider controversy surrounding his comments about women.

The backlash began during Gillis’ third hosting appearance on Saturday Night Live on October 10.
During his opening monologue, the Tires star joked about returning to the gym after a lengthy absence and being surprised by women’s workout clothing.
He used a derogatory term to describe women wearing revealing athletic shorts, prompting criticism over the way he characterized female gymgoers.
Gillis continued the routine by describing brightly colored, tight-fitting shorts and joking about the possibility of appearing in workout videos filmed for TikTok.
Although presented as stand-up comedy, the remarks drew objections from viewers and fellow entertainers who considered them offensive toward women.
Dan Levy Condemns Gillis’ Remarks in Public Response

Actor and former SNL host Dan Levy was among those who publicly criticized the monologue.
In an Instagram video, Levy expressed disbelief that the remarks had aired on television.
He argued that women’s clothing choices did not justify the insulting language Gillis had used.
Levy also challenged the apparent double standard surrounding how men and women dress at the gym.
His response attracted attention from other entertainment figures, including Elizabeth Banks, Laraine Newman, Sophia Bush and Hannah Einbinder.
Former SNL cast member Ego Nwodim and country singer Maren Morris also responded to or alluded to the controversy.
Meanwhile, longtime Saturday Night Live personality Michael Che faced questions about Gillis’ remarks during an appearance on Today.
Shane Gillis’ History With Saturday Night Live
Gillis’ latest hosting appearance marked another chapter in his complicated relationship with the NBC sketch comedy series.
He was originally announced as a cast member ahead of the show’s 45th season in 2019.
However, he was dropped before appearing on the program after previous racist and homophobic remarks resurfaced.
Despite that early controversy, Gillis later returned to SNL as a guest host.
His October 10 appearance was his third time hosting the show, with Spanish singer Rosalía serving as the musical guest.
The latest criticism has once again placed his comedy style under scrutiny, with the SNL UK segment demonstrating how widely the discussion has spread.
Saturday Night Live Prepares for Halloween Episode
The American edition of Saturday Night Live is scheduled to return on October 31 with a Halloween-themed episode.
Actress Inde Navarrette is set to host, while Gracie Abrams will appear as the musical guest.
Meanwhile, Magliano’s sharp response has added another prominent voice to the debate over Gillis’ monologue and the boundaries of comedy on live television.
