The 1% Club Contestants Stumped by Tricky Letter Puzzle as Three Players Are Eliminated
A deceptively simple word puzzle proved too difficult for three contestants on The 1% Club, narrowing the field as the competition entered its final stages. With only 10 players remaining, host Lee Mack presented a challenging 15% question that required contestants to think carefully about the meaning and arrangement of letters.
The episode put the remaining players through a series of increasingly difficult tests, with every correct answer bringing them closer to the chance of winning a share of the jackpot.

A 15% Word Puzzle Trips Up Three Contestants

The challenge asked:
“Which two words, that contain the same five letters as each other but in a different order, mean the same as the two words below? Fairly silent.”
As the countdown began, the contestants tried to find two alternative words that used the same five letters but expressed the same meaning.
Lee Mack added his usual humour to the tense moment, joking: “And the answer isn’t Silent Fairly.”
When time ran out, it was revealed that three of the 10 remaining players had failed to solve the puzzle.
Contestant Jackie was among those who answered correctly. However, she admitted that her confidence was beginning to fade as the questions became harder, telling Lee she was getting “less confident with every question”.
The intended answer was “quite quiet” — two words that use the same five letters as “fairly silent”, rearranged into a different order.
Despite getting through that round, Jackie’s progress came to an end shortly afterwards when she was unable to answer the next challenge.
The 5% Question Sends Jackie Home

The next puzzle involved an unusual clock face, with its minute hand pointing at six in the position normally occupied by 12, while the shorter hour hand was close to 10, where nine would ordinarily appear.
Contestants had to work out what time the clock would show after both hands moved 30 minutes clockwise.
The correct answer was 10 o’clock.
Jackie was the only contestant eliminated at this stage. Her departure left five players with the opportunity to compete for a potential £97,000 prize.
Five Finalists Gamble Their £10,000
All five remaining contestants decided to risk their £10,000 prize for the chance to win a larger amount and secure a place in the exclusive 1% Club.
Their final challenge asked them to identify a new word that could connect a series of capitalised words in a sentence:
“My SON TED ate raw FOOD and got SICK, then went to BED with me by his SIDE.”
Despite making it all the way to the final stage, none of the five contestants managed to find the solution.
The answer was “sea”, which could be placed before each of the capitalised words to create a series of new words.
Some of The 1% Club’s Most Challenging Puzzles

With 100 contestants competing to reach the final 1% question and win a share of the jackpot, the show has featured plenty of puzzles that test logic, observation and lateral thinking. Some of its memorable challenges have included:
- The butterfly puzzle: Players had to compare three butterfly images and identify which butterflies were exactly the same on both sides.
- The symbol sequence: Contestants were shown groups of six symbols and asked to identify which groups remained in the same order when read from left to right or right to left.
- The four-digit challenge: Players had to calculate how many different combinations could be displayed using four digits on one hand.
- The secret diary code: Contestants were asked to decipher a coded entry from Peter’s old diary after he forgot how to interpret the message. The puzzle included the sequence: “WH89 I GR1W UP I WA92 21 B8 A 5L1RI72.”
- The hidden eyes puzzle: Players had to count the number of eyes in an image made up of letters, symbols and emojis.
- The numbered grid challenge: A grid contained numbers in ascending order from 1 to 49. Starting at the central square, 25, the instruction “SEEN” led to square 27, while “NEW” took players to square 20. They then had to work out which square “SEWN” would lead to.
- The scrambled food word: In a seemingly easier challenge, contestants were shown the letters “ABDER” and asked to identify the common food hidden within them.
From scrambled words and coded messages to visual puzzles and unusual number patterns, The 1% Club continues to challenge contestants with questions that often require more than quick calculations or general knowledge. Even players who make it through several rounds can find themselves caught out by an unexpected twist.
