Carrie Underwood Just Gave Sunday Night Football A Major Rock ’N’ Roll Makeover! After 14 seasons, Carrie is reimagining “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night” with a louder, edgier sound — and a new opening that takes her from an intimate club to a packed stadium. There’s also a surprising Joan Jett connection behind the anthem… and fans already have VERY different opinions about the new version.

Carrie Underwood has given one of television’s most recognizable sports openings a fresh new sound, bringing a harder rock edge to the Sunday Night Football theme for the 2026 NFL season.

The country superstar officially unveiled the revamped opening on Sunday, September 13, ahead of the season’s first Sunday Night Football matchup. The new version reimagines the familiar “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night” while leaning more heavily into Underwood’s longtime love of rock music.

Carrie Underwood Returns for Her 14th Season

NBC confirmed in August that Underwood would return as the featured singer for Sunday Night Football for a 14th consecutive season. She first took over the role in 2013, following Faith Hill’s six-season run from 2007 through 2012.

Although the opening has evolved over the years, “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night” has remained closely associated with Underwood’s time on the program. The anthem itself originated as a reworking of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ “I Hate Myself for Loving You,” giving the long-running NFL tradition its rock foundation.

For 2026, however, the creative team decided to push that influence further.

Tripp Dixon, the creative director who has worked on the Sunday Night Football opening throughout Underwood’s tenure, said the new version was inspired by the singer’s “deep, well-documented love of rock music.” He also pointed to the anthem’s origins in pure rock ’n’ roll as a natural fit for the updated direction.

A Rock Star Fever Dream

The new opening takes Underwood through three different environments, showcasing her performing in an intimate club, a packed football stadium and a recording studio.

The result gives the familiar Sunday Night Football tradition a noticeably different atmosphere while keeping Underwood at the center of the production.

Underwood previously described the concept as bringing the football broadcast into her “ongoing rock star fever dream.” She said she loved the new version of the track and praised Dixon and the production team for creating an opening that captures both the spirit of the iconic song and the energy of rock ’n’ roll.

She also called it one of her favorite Sunday Night Football openings to date.

The revamped sequence made its full debut on September 13, following a preview that NBC had announced would air ahead of the season.

The new theme quickly sparked discussion among NFL viewers, with reactions ranging from enthusiastic praise to criticism of the remix.

One fan applauded the performance, calling it “awesome” and saying it set the tone for the football season.

Another viewer was more divided, praising Underwood herself while questioning the new version used during the stadium sequence.

That mixed response highlights just how familiar the Sunday Night Football opening has become for viewers. After years of hearing Underwood’s voice introduce the NFL’s Sunday-night broadcast, even a relatively subtle musical change was enough to get fans talking.

For now, Underwood remains firmly at the center of the tradition—and the 2026 version gives the familiar anthem a louder, more distinctly rock-inspired identity.
