Prince William Reveals His Unexpected DJ Stage Name and Shares Hilarious Stories From His Life Outside Royal Duties
Prince William once imagined a very different future from becoming king — and his childhood dream of becoming a DJ even came with an unusual stage name.
The Prince of Wales made the revelation during a surprise appearance on The Graham Norton Show on Friday, October 23. Joining Cate Blanchett, Robert Irwin and Hannah Waddingham for a special episode linked to the Earthshot Prize, William offered a rare glimpse into his younger ambitions, family life and some amusing encounters from his royal duties.

From Aspiring Police Officer to DJ Xara
Asked what career he might have pursued had he not been born into the royal family, William revealed that he initially wanted to become a police officer.
He believed he would have been good at the job, but his ambitions eventually took a musical turn. During a phase when he dreamed of becoming a DJ, he even came up with a name for himself: DJ Xara, spelled with an X.
Looking back on the idea, William admitted that the experiment did not go particularly well and joked that the name was not a good one.

The Man Who Mistook William for Another Prince
William also recalled a memorable encounter during a visit to local communities in Somerset, where one man appeared to expect him to perform a song.
The gentleman looked up at the Prince and asked when he was going to sing. Confused, William sought clarification, only for the man to repeat his question about an upcoming performance.
A woman sitting behind the gentleman then intervened to explain that William was not the prince he had in mind.
It turned out that the man wanted to hear Purple Rain. William admitted that he did not know the lyrics, leaving the misunderstanding as an amusing memory from one of his public visits.
William Explains the Story Behind His Taylor Swift Photo

The conversation also returned to William’s meeting with Taylor Swift at Wembley Stadium during her Eras Tour in June 2024. He attended with Prince George and Princess Charlotte, and the encounter produced a much-discussed photograph featuring Swift and Travis Kelce.
Reflecting on the moment, William joked that he had not fully appreciated the significance of the photograph. He also revealed that he had repeatedly tried to move George out of the frame, but the young prince kept returning.
William joked that he had been attempting to arrange a picture featuring himself, Taylor Swift and the children — only for George to keep finding his way back into the shot.
Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis Are Hooked on The Celebrity Traitors

Away from royal engagements, William offered a glimpse into what his family enjoys watching together at home.
He revealed that The Celebrity Traitors had become a favourite, with Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis particularly obsessed with the show. William described it as excellent television and said the whole family enjoyed watching it.
His enthusiasm even led him to try to persuade contestant Ross Kemp to reveal who won, although he was unsuccessful.
William also admitted that he had tested Kemp’s famously suspicious demeanour himself. After watching the first episode, he encountered the contestant the following day and, in what he described as an appropriate manner, tried touching him to see how he would react.
According to William, Kemp turned out to be surprisingly jumpy.
The exchange offered another lighthearted glimpse into the Prince’s sense of humour and the family’s shared entertainment habits.
Earthshot Prize Celebrations Ahead in Mumbai

William’s appearance came ahead of the Earthshot Prize celebrations scheduled for November in Mumbai. The environmental initiative recognises solutions designed to address some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
While the special episode highlighted the Prince’s work on sustainability, his candid stories about his childhood ambitions, royal encounters and life with his children offered viewers a more personal side of the future king.
