Sir Tom Jones Turned Leonard Cohen’s “The Tower Of Song” Into An Unexpectedly Emotional Moment On The Voice UK. The song’s reflections on age, loss and a life devoted to music clearly struck a personal chord with Jones — and his voice soon had will.i.am and Kelly Rowland visibly fighting back tears. No Big Production. Just Tom, A Piano And A Lifetime Of Emotion.

Tom Jones Leaves The Voice UK Coaches In Tears With A Powerful Leonard Cohen Performance

Sir Tom Jones has spent more than six decades proving the strength of his voice, but his latest impromptu performance on The Voice UK showed a very different side of the Welsh music legend.

Instead of one of his famous upbeat hits, Jones chose Leonard Cohen’s “The Tower of Song” — a deeply personal song he once described as one that “touches a nerve with me.” Within minutes, the performance had fellow coaches will.i.am and Kelly Rowland visibly emotional, while members of the audience were also moved to tears.

Why “The Tower Of Song” Means So Much To Tom Jones

Jones introduced the song himself, explaining that Cohen’s writing resonated with him before asking the pianist on set whether they could play it.

The choice was particularly fitting. “The Tower of Song” reflects on ageing, lost friends and a lifetime spent making music — themes that have taken on a deeply personal meaning for Jones.

The song was originally written and recorded by Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen and appeared on his 1988 album I’m Your Man. Jones later recorded his own version for his 2012 album Spirit in the Room.

Once the pianist began playing, Jones needed little more than his voice to transform the room.

His delivery was restrained but intensely emotional, allowing the lyrics to carry much of the weight. Rather than simply demonstrating his famous vocal power, Jones seemed to draw on decades of personal experience, giving the performance an unusually intimate quality.

will.i.am Struggles To Put The Moment Into Words

By the time Jones finished, the emotional reaction around the studio was impossible to miss.

The audience rose to its feet, while will.i.am became visibly tearful. The two men eventually embraced, with the Black Eyed Peas star wiping away tears as he tried to explain what the performance had stirred in him.

“I’m trying to make sense of my emotion right now,” will.i.am said, describing Jones as someone whose 85 years of experience had been poured into the performance.

He thanked Jones for giving the coaches and audience another one of those memorable moments, calling the singer a gift to them all.

Kelly Rowland was also visibly moved by the rendition, while viewers watching the performance online responded with similarly emotional reactions.

Some fans described the performance as deeply affecting, praising the way Jones seemed to bring a lifetime of experiences into Cohen’s lyrics.

Tom Jones Has A Long History Of Impromptu Performances

Tom Jones Claims He Was Fired From 'The Voice UK' By ITV

For longtime The Voice UK viewers, Jones spontaneously breaking into song is hardly unusual.

ITV has previously highlighted a collection of his memorable performances on the programme, including “It’s Not Unusual,” “Kiss,” “You Can Leave Your Hat On,” “Never Loved A Man” with Jennifer Hudson and “Cry To Me” with Bethzienna Williams.

One of his most joyful Voice UK moments came when he performed “It’s Not Unusual” during the 2020 Blind Auditions.

The song, one of Jones’s signature hits, had the opposite effect to “The Tower of Song.” Instead of bringing the room to a standstill, it had the audience on its feet and showcased the playful, energetic side of a performer who has spent decades commanding a stage.

A Performance That Felt Different

There was something distinctly different about “The Tower of Song.”

The performance was not built around spectacle or a familiar crowd-pleasing anthem. It was Jones, a piano and a song whose themes already seemed closely connected to his own life.

That combination gave the rendition an emotional weight that even his fellow coaches struggled to shake off.

More than simply another demonstration of why Jones remains one of Britain’s most recognisable voices, the performance offered a glimpse of what happens when a legendary singer finds a song that speaks directly to his own experiences.

And judging by the reaction in the room — and from viewers watching at home — “The Tower of Song” became one of those rare The Voice UK moments that was about far more than simply singing.
