After vowing not to perform in Nashville again until 2027, Jelly Roll was the last person fans were expecting to see at CMA Fest.

Country music’s longest-running music festival, CMA Fest, kicked off its 54th year on Thursday, June 4th.

Beginning in 1972 as “Fan Fest,” the event was created to allow country music fans to connect with their favorite artists live and in person. Only 5,000 guests attended the first year, and that number has since grown to over 100,000.

The four-day festival hosted in Nashville is unlike any other. All daytime performances across multiple stages are free for fans to attend. Each evening, headline performances by the biggest names in country music take place at Nissan Stadium in a ticketed show.

Jelly Roll Surprises 60,000+ Fans At Nissan Stadium

As fans settled in for night one at Nissan Stadium on Thursday night, an unexpected figure took the main stage.

“Everybody put your hands up,” shouted Jelly Roll, eliciting a roar of cheers from the unsuspecting crowd. He continued:

“Now this is normally the part of the show where I introduce myself. I tell you what my name is, I tell you what I plan on doing the next 30 minutes, but I prayed about it backstage,, and God said, ‘Son do you think tonight has anything to do about you?’”

Jelly Roll took the stadium to church with a passionate performance of his hit song “Hard Fought Hallelujah.” After a few more songs, the Tennessee native reflected on why his performance carried personal significance.

The “Save Me” singer has been open about the struggles of his teen and young adult years, which landed him behind bars on more than one occasion. The correctional facility where he once was incarcerated is located adjacent to Nissan Stadium. He shared:

“This is a hometown show for me. When I was a kid, I spent almost three years of my life locked up every single day. I would listen to CMA Fest through my cell window. I serve a God of second chances…25 years later, that little boy is screaming inside of me right now as I look out at 60,000 people at CMA Fest right now.”

Why Jelly Roll’s Appearance Was Such A Shock

In May 2025, Jelly Roll headlined the inaugural Music City Rodeo at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. During his set, he made a surprisingly bold statement:

“This will be my last Nashville show until 2027, y’all. Hear me out, though. This is why, because I need y’all’s help. I want to be the first act to play Nissan Stadium, when it opens in the spring of 2027.”

Construction is currently underway for the new Nissan Stadium, immediately adjacent to the current one, which opened in 1999. It is unclear whether Jelly Roll’s goal to be the first act to play in the new venue remains.
