Dancing with the Stars delivered one of its most touching tributes on Tuesday night during “Dedication Night,” as actress Julia Stiles honored her late costar Heath Ledger with an emotional contemporary routine set to Frankie Valli’s classic “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”
The performance served as a direct tribute to the iconic bleacher serenade Ledger performed in their 1999 romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. To close out the tribute, Stiles orchestrated a surprise reunion, bringing out nearly the entire core ensemble of the seminal teen film onto the ballroom floor.
The Performance: Recreating Ledger’s “Lust for Life”

Stiles, 45, paired with pro Ezra Sosa, took the stage wearing a flowing royal-blue gown designed as a deliberate sartorial callback to the blue prom dress worn by her character, Kat Stratford, in the 1999 film.
The contemporary choreography wove in playful echoes of Ledger’s choreography from the movie’s stadium scene. The routine concluded with a quiet, solemn sequence:
-
Stiles walked toward a projected photograph of herself and Ledger from the film set.
-
She gently laid a single rose on the staging steps.
-
Backing away from the photo, she turned to reveal the surprise arrival of her former castmates: Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Cameron James), Larisa Oleynik (Bianca Stratford), Gabrielle Union (Chastity Church), Andrew Keegan (Joey Donner), and Susan May Pratt (Mandella).
“I Wish I Could Pick Up the Phone”

Ledger passed away in January 2008 at the age of 28 from an accidental prescription drug overdose, just before his posthumous Oscar-winning turn as the Joker in The Dark Knight.
In pre-taped rehearsal footage, Stiles spoke candidly about the emotional weight of revisiting the era that launched their careers:
“I see pictures from that time, and I’m like, wow… It was so easy with him. I have so many great memories, but I’m also really sad, because I wish I could pick up the phone and be like, ‘Hey dude, people really care about that movie. We did something special.’ And I can’t do that.”
Speaking to co-host Julianne Hough after the dance, Stiles reflected on their dynamic as teenagers:
“I remember that Heath just brought out the light in everybody. He was the leader of the pack at the time. He made everybody else shine.”
A Tribute Guided by Respect

In a statement shared alongside partner Ezra Sosa prior to the live broadcast, the duo stressed that the tribute was prepared in close coordination with those in Ledger’s personal circle:
-
Intentionality: “From the very beginning, it was incredibly important to both Julia and I that this tribute be created with the utmost respect, thoughtfulness, and close guidance from those who hold Heath and his memory closest.”
-
Preserving a Legacy: “This isn’t about defining a relationship or telling a story that isn’t ours to tell. It’s about honoring a beautiful moment in time, a film that changed so many lives, and someone whose impact continues to be felt by generations.”

The ballroom appearance marked the first time the ensemble had gathered publicly in such numbers since the late 1990s, offering audiences a rare, heartfelt reminder of Ledger’s enduring cinematic and personal impact.
