The critics had their say—then Hannah Harper picked Mean and let the music answer for her. On American Idol’s Taylor Swift Night, Hannah Harper turned online criticism into her biggest triumph with a standout performance of Taylor Swift’s “Mean.” The Missouri singer’s emotional take on the country hit struck a chord with viewers, many declaring she was the clear standout of the night and praising her for responding to critics with confidence instead of words.

“This is the only performance of the Taylor Swift songs that makes sense to me. She sounds amazing.” Hannah Harper’s take on “Mean” sure hit the spot for fans on American Idol’s Taylor Swift night! If anyone was up to doing justice to Taylor’s early country hit, then it was certainly this Missouri talent. Hannah’s inspiration in choosing “Mean” was on the mark, as she had recently been singled out for some particularly pointed criticisms by some netizens for her performance style.

American Idol 2026: Hannah Harper Taylor Swift Night Performances

With the gorgeously twangy style Hannah showed here, she proved yet again why she’s got major staying power on Idol 2026. The smile on her face as she performed showed that she was in her element and was just locked in and loving the moment. The Music Man has to say the 25-year-old singer showed the confidence and power of someone who has really hit their stride as the season progressed. The good vibes rubbed off on the judges, and the ear-to-ear smile on guest judge Nikki Glaser’s face said it all.

American Idol uploaded Hannah’s take on “Mean” on April 28, 2026. It hit 176,000 views within a week, becoming the most popular cover from Taylor Swift night. Viewers said that Taylor would be proud of what the Missouri mum delivered, and added comments such as “I love how she somehow makes the song like hers” and “I love how Nikki Glaser is treating this like she’s back at the Eras Tour.”

Hannah has shown her command of the songbook of the greatest American female singer-songwriters several times throughout season 24 of American Idol. Another highlight from Hannah’s Idol run was her take on Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide.” This intimate rendition of Stevie Nicks’ masterpiece showed that Hannah does some of her best work on stripped-back acoustic numbers. The tone of her voice and her emotional vulnerability made this such a memorable performance.

Taylor Swift released “Mean” on March 7, 2011, as the third single from her third studio album Speak Now. A number of commentators have suggested that the song is a response to a particularly scathing review of Taylor’s duet with Stevie Nicks at the 2010 Grammys by critic Bob Lefsetz. In the post, which can still be found on his website, Bob claimed Taylor “can’t sing” and said she “killed her career overnight.” Now, those claims have aged rather poorly, but Taylor’s clapback with “Mean” still sounds fresh. Other critics praised “Mean” as an anti-bullying anthem, and it scored Taylor a US triple Platinum hit.
