Netflix viewers couldn’t believe a key tribute was ‘missing’ from the new Heartstopper film.
The beloved young adult series first hit screens in 2022 and built a strong fanbase before ending in 2024.
Netflix has now released a final feature-length instalment called Heartstopper Forever, which sees main characters Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) getting ready to leave for university.
While fans have shared glowing reviews for the movie, they couldn’t help but notice a missing tribute to Echo the dog, who played Nick Nelson’s pet Border Collie.

Echo sadly died in May after being diagnosed with brain cancer. He was nine years old.

Considering the huge loss to the fanbase, viewers on Reddit were surprised when the film didn’t end with a tribute to Echo.
One user wrote: “[…] I always watch the full credits and I didn’t see anything about Echo (Nellie’s actor) regarding something to be an in memorial as the Border Collie passed away in May this year.
“Maybe I am blind and missed it but watching it on Netflix I didn’t spot any acknowledgement of the passing and the only time Echo was mentioned was to say about him playing Nellie.”
It turns out Netflix actually shared a tribute in the Heartstopper Forever: Official Podcast, which most viewers might have missed.

You can find it at the end of Episode 4, which features interviews with original writer Alice Oseman and producer Patrick Walters.
Just before the credits roll, a memorial card appears on screen with a picture of Echo in his role as Nellie.
Author Alice also revealed that she briefly considered having Nellie die in earlier seasons to boost Nick’s “emotional development,” but soon realised “no one wants that”.

Nellie had become a key character in the show, and fans were left heartbroken when news of his actor’s passing broke.
Taking to Instagram to share their condolences, one viewer commented: “Thank you for being the sweetest dog to Char and Nick and all of us ECHO. REST WELL BOY, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE MISSED.”
Someone else said: “Rest well Echo thanks for being Nellie,” while a third fan added: “Noo poor Echo I’ll miss him so much.”
