Absolute Legend. That was the verdict after Wayne Rooney stunned fans by unexpectedly belting out a classic Irish folk ballad—and hardly anyone could believe what they were hearing. The Manchester United icon has gone viral for showing off a side of himself few fans had ever seen, with his performance earning widespread praise across social media. What started as a lighthearted behind-the-scenes moment quickly became one of Rooney’s most talked-about clips in years, leaving even longtime supporters pleasantly surprised. It’s definitely not the Wayne Rooney most people were expecting.

ALTHOUGH Wayne Rooney rose to fame for his skills with his feet, he’s shown his voice isn’t half-bad either.

The Man United icon has stolen Irish hearts with his rendition of a Dubliners classic.

Rooney showed he’s in touch with his 60s tunes after performing Seven Drunken Nights, which was released by The Dubliners in 1967 as part of the album A Drop of the Hard Stuff.

In a clip shared by The Overlap on their social media platforms ahead of the release of The Green Room, Rooney gives a commendable rendition of the classic Irish folk ballad.

The Green Room is a behind the scenes segment offering viewers snippets of casual chats, and funny interactions between legends like Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Wayne Rooney and Jamie Carragher before or after they film their main episodes.

The clip of Rooney’s vocals caused a stir in The Overlap’s comments sections with many Irish fans delighted by his taste in music.

Colette remarked: “Singing in an Irish accent too, very well taught!”

Geraldine laughed: “Lol, did Roy teach you that?” And Declan added: “Many a Rooney has belted that one out over the years.”

Irish fans haven’t lost hope of seeing a Rooney lead the line for the Boys in Green just yet.

Wayne’s wife Coleen – who is of Irish heritage – spoke on The Late Late Show in March of this year regarding her son Kai’s eligibility to play for Ireland.

The 16-year-old has been ripping it up for Manchester United’s youth teams and recently signed his first professional contract.

Coleen said: “Obviously they’re so young yet, we haven’t got to that point, but I think they’d be proud to play for Ireland.”

The Ireland scouts will be keeping an eye on young Rooney. He scored two goals in six appearances for Man Utd’s Under-18s last season.

Some keen-eyed fans have likened his ball-striking techniques to that of his father’s and if Kai turns out to be half the player Wayne was he’d be welcomed to the Aviva Stadium with open arms.
