Only 1% Could Crack This in 30 Seconds… The 1% Club’s Final Four-Word Puzzle Looks Almost Ridiculously Simple — Until You Try To Spot The Tiny Connection That Separates The Sharpest Minds From Everyone Else

Can You Solve This Deceptively Simple 1% Club Question?

If you think you’re good at quizzes, The 1% Club has a habit of making you reconsider that confidence.

Hosted by Lee Mack, the quiz show begins with questions that most people can solve before gradually becoming more difficult. By the time contestants reach the final stages, the questions are designed to test the kind of lateral thinking that only a small percentage of people can manage.

There is plenty of money at stake, too. Contestants add £1,000 to the prize pot when they are eliminated or when they use the money to bypass a round.

How The 1% Club works

The show features 15 questions, with the number of people able to answer each one correctly steadily falling.

Contestants who make it through 14 questions face a major decision. Those still in the game, if there are any, can split £10,000 equally among themselves or take the risk of going for the final prize pot.

That last question is supposed to be the toughest of them all. Yet, as The 1% Club regularly demonstrates, the most difficult questions can sometimes look remarkably straightforward.

Here’s one that puts that idea to the test.

If quiz show questions have you like this then it's time to practice.

The question

Give yourself the full 30 seconds that contestants receive on the show before looking for the answer.

Into, Therefore, Evaluate, Benign.

All of these words have something in common. Can you work out what it is?

Screenshot of a game show question: "All the words in this list have something specific in common. What is it?" The words are: Into, Therefore, Evaluate, Benign.

Take a moment and think it through before scrolling any further.

The questions on The 1% Club often depend on spotting a hidden trick or pattern. Once you see what the question is doing, the solution can suddenly become much easier.

If you’re stuck, there’s one useful clue: read the words out loud.

That may be enough to reveal the answer.

"Oh my god I figured out the right answer!" You said, definitely not having cheated and scrolled down to learn what it was.

The answer

The endings of all four words sound like numbers.

  • Into sounds like in-two
  • Therefore sounds like there-four
  • Evaluate sounds like evalu-eight
  • Benign sounds like ben-nine

Screenshot of a game show screen displaying a word puzzle: "Into," "Therefore," "Evaluate," and "Benign" are listed; the answer is that they all end with the sound of a number (2, 4, 8, 9).

So the connection is hidden in the way the words sound rather than in their meanings or spelling.

That’s exactly the sort of trick that The 1% Club uses to separate contestants who spot the pattern from those who don’t.

If you managed to solve it within the 30 seconds, there are plenty more challenging 1% Club questions to try, including puzzles that only one percent of the country managed to answer correctly.

And if those prove too difficult, there are also supposedly easier questions that have still left contestants struggling to find the right answer.
